Hi folks, AWS has shared steps to mitigate Crowdstrike recent update bug. It is available on our Health Dashboard. July 19 12:20 AM PDT: We can confirm reports of connectivity issues and reboots of Windows Instances, Windows Workspaces and Appstream Applications related to a recent update to the Crowdstrike agent (csagent.sys), which is resulting in a stop error (BSOD) within the Windows operating system. AWS services and network connectivity continue to operate normally. CrowdStrike have provided a manual mitigation for the issue, which requires the following steps to be taken. 1. Boot into Safe Mode or the Windows Recovery Environment 2. Navigate to the following directory: C:\Windows\System32\drivers\CrowdStrike 3. Locate the file “C-00000291*.sys”, and delete it. 4. Reboot the Machine These can be used on Windows services outside of AWS, but these steps are not applicable to Windows EC2 Instances or Windows Workspaces that are affected by the CrowdStrike issue. For EC2 instances, there are currently two paths to recovery. First, customers can relaunch the EC2 instance from a snapshot or image taken before 9:30 PM PDT. We have also been able to confirm that the update that caused the CrowdStrike agent issue is no longer being automatically updated. Second, the following steps can be followed to delete the file on the affected instance: 1. Create a snapshot of the EBS root volume of the affected instance 2. Create a new EBS Volume from the snapshot in the same availability zone 3. Launch a new Windows instance in that availability zone using a similar version of Windows 4. Attach the EBS volume from step (2) to the new Windows instance as a data volume 5. Navigate to \windows\system32\drivers\CrowdStrike\ folder on the attached volume and delete "C00000291*.sys" 6. Detach the EBS volume from the new Windows instance 7. Create a snapshot of the detached EBS volume 8. Replace the root volume of the original instance with the new snapshot 9. Start the original instance For Amazon Workspaces, we would recommend restoring to a recent backup of the workspace.
