The entire Cloudburst Group team grieves the loss and devastation experienced by numerous communities throughout the Southeast, including those hit by Hurricane Helene’s catastrophic impacts in western North Carolina.  Cloudburst’s subject-matter experts work directly with communities after disasters to help homeless services providers navigate the complexities of the disaster response system. In recognition of LGBTQIA History Month, The Cloudburst Group affirms and celebrates the LGBTQIA community while acknowledging significant challenges that remain in the ongoing fight for rights and acceptance. Safe and stable housing is one of these challenges. Based upon a 2022 study conducted by the Trevor Project, 28% of LGBTQIA youth reported experiencing homelessness or housing instability at some point in their lives — and those who did were two to four times more likely to report depression, anxiety, self-harm, and considering and attempting suicide, compared to those with stable housing. Additionally they found that 16% of LGBTQIA youths reported that they had slept away from parents or caregivers because they ran away from home, with more than half (55%) reporting that they ran away from home because of mistreatment or fear of mistreatment due to their identity. LGBTQIA youth are at an increased rate for housing instability and homelessness, and it is critical that housing programs and services understand their particular needs.
