Our portfolio company, ERI, the nation’s largest fully integrated IT and electronics asset disposition (ITAD) provider and cybersecurity-focused hardware destruction company, launched its first alkaline battery recycling plant. The plant is located within ERI’s state-of-the-art e-waste recycling and ITAD facility in Plainfield, Indiana, where millions of pounds of electronic waste are responsibly recycled each year. ERI can arrange logistics and accept alkaline batteries at all of its eight locations: Arizona, California, Indiana, Massachusetts, New Jersey, North Carolina, Texas, Washington. “Reducing waste and improving recycling in this country is possible. It is happening right now in Minnesota with investments like ours and with well-designed material collection and processing systems,” said Jennifer Louie of Closed Loop Partners and Megan Daum of American Beverage on the recent multi-million-dollar loan to Eureka Recycling, a leading nonprofit recycling organization and longstanding player in driving Minneapolis toward material circularity. The more than $10 million loan from Closed Loop Partners’ Infrastructure Group, including $3 million from American Beverage and the Minnesota Beverage Association, will support state-of-the-art upgrades to Eureka’s facility. Alongside the loan, The Recycling Partnership provided a grant to support this project. The financing will fund new, highly efficient optical sorters to separate materials and increase what’s being remade into new products. [NEW REPORT] Today, the #CompostingConsortium, managed by Closed Loop Partners' Center for the Circular Economy, released a new essential blueprint, co-authored with Eco-Cycle, to guide municipal leaders in zero waste, solid waste and sustainability in establishing and scaling composting infrastructure and organics management programs across the U.S. Alongside the release of the blueprint, the Consortium invites U.S. municipalities and composters to join two newly launched platforms that support counties, cities and composters in scaling organics infrastructure that diverts food waste from landfill: the Composter Innovator Program and the Municipal Partner Platform. Closed Loop Partners partnered with American Beverage to provide a multi-million-dollar catalytic loan to Balcones Recycling. This is part of a $68 million investment across several partners in the new state-of-the-art materials recovery facility in San Antonio, Texas. This week, our friends at Perpetual: shared a behind-the-scenes Q&A on the Petaluma Reusable Cup Project with Kate Daly, Managing Director and Head of Closed Loop Partners' Center for the Circular Economy. Starting August 5, more than 30 restaurants in the City of Petaluma, CA, will swap their single-use cups for to-go reusable cups to all customers at no cost, and widespread return points will also be available across the city. Starbucks, The Coca-Cola Company, PepsiCo, Peet's Coffee, Yum! Brands and other global and local brands and restaurants are partnering in The Petaluma Reusable Cup Project from the #NextGen Consortium, led by the Center for the Circular Economy at Closed Loop Partners. "Our brand partners in the NextGen Consortium bring a spirit of collaboration to all our work together, knowing that collaboration and innovation are critical to scale successful recovery and reuse solutions. We know that reuse of to-go cups is challenging, and that it’s going to take experimentation to figure out how to get reuse right and ensure high return rates," says Kate Daly. However, given the importance of partnership between federal and state governments, in March 2023, the Biden-Harris Administration announced the official launch of the Federal-State Buy Clean Partnership with 12 leading states—California, Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Oregon and Washington—and later welcomed Minnesota into the partnership—which ensures wider adoption of Buy Clean policies.
