A quick reaction to yesterday's Howard Marks Memo, The Folly of Uncertainty: In this memo Marks asserts that the idea of absolute certainty is impossible. While his context is geopolitical, and then related to macroeconomics and broader markets, it's an applicable theme in the arena of private investing as well. Outcome bias speaks to the idea that a decision should not be judged by its outcome, but rather the quality of the decision at the time that it's made. In today's world, market sentiments swing wildly, marked by irrational behaviors and an ever present element of randomness. A successful investment might be a product of luck rather than skill, and a skillful and informed investment can often result in a loss. In private markets, I believe that this concept is particularly relevant, given the lack of real-time information and investment lifecycles that typically last the better part of a decade (at least). With these variables, I think the best way to measure decision quality is by conducting due diligence. Length and thoroughness can vary, but even the most succinct memo should a) articulate an investment thesis, and b) identify potential risks. With this effort, tracked throughout time, an investor can continue to evaluate these two pillars (thesis and risk) while navigating the inevitable uncertainty that accompanies macroeconomic climates and individual business trajectories. This way one can better evaluate if they were, as Marks says, "right for the right reason.” https://lnkd.in/eG5buqAE
