With thanks to our community of funders, implementing partners, and grantees, we're thrilled to release our 2023 annual report, "The Moment is Now." 2023 was a pivotal turning point in the fight for a safer climate future, demonstrating what's possible when we commit to transformative #climate solutions. By the end of the year: 🌍 Drive Electric LEAP Fund had tripled in size and distributed a total of $3.4 million, supporting 23 partner organizations across Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia. 🚢 Our grantees and partners built momentum for the International Maritime Organization's revised #MaritimeShipping strategy, which aims to achieve net-zero emissions by or before 2050. One initiative from our partner, Ports for People, resulted in significant regulatory changes in California’s Zero Emissions Ferry Mandate and inspired similar actions in other countries. 💰 Our Sustainable Finance program team launched a new people- and community-centered strategy under Shelagh Whitley’s leadership. Through this strategic refresh, we're positioned to unlock sustainable finance at scale alongside our global partners and grantees. InformationWeek took a look at Hurricane Helene's devastation and what it means for IT resilience. We chatted with Asheville, NC-based Blue Ridge Technology owner Zack Calloway about trying to get IT systems up and operating in a disaster zone. We also looked at lessons from previous storms with former Florida CIO Jamie Grant, and considered the potential of increasingly unpredictable weather events due to climate change with thoughts from ClimateWorks Foundation's Jessica Hitt. #Helene #DisasterResponse #ITleaders #CIO https://lnkd.in/eYyavJRg

Communities and civil society advocates worldwide have built and strengthened robust movements that have exposed the human and environmental tolls of irresponsible mining. The clean energy transition must avoid replicating the exploitative mining practices of fossil fuel companies and other extractive industries. Read more 👉 https://lnkd.in/gWx2qgfJ
Happy Friday! Sharing a couple of exciting things: First, as many partners know, ClimateWorks launched its Minerals for the Energy Transition Initiative early last year, and we have finalized our strategy and landing page a few months ago, you can check it out here: https://lnkd.in/eCPRm-VT Second, I'm pleased to kick off our minerals blog series with a blog-in-conversation with two partners in the field, Davidzo Muchawaya and Pochoy Labog, sharing their challenges and hopes for a responsible minerals supply chain across Africa and South-East Asia - check out their rich reflections in a blog link below. Stay tuned for upcoming spotlights on opportunities for #responsiblemineralssupplychain through the remainder of this year!

Though short-lived in the atmosphere, methane is over 80 times more effective than carbon dioxide at trapping heat over a 20-year period. Together with reducing carbon dioxide #emissions, large reductions in methane emissions are needed to limit warming and impacts from #ClimateChange – yet global methane emissions continue to rise each year. We're proud to support a new report from our partners at The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, which recommends a research agenda to fully assess the need and potential for atmospheric methane removal. Atmospheric #methane removal is human interventions to accelerate the conversion of methane in the atmosphere to a less potent form or to physically remove methane from the atmosphere and store it elsewhere, but this approach is nascent. This new report identifies five priority research identifies five priority research areas that would inform the technical, economic, and social viability of atmospheric methane removal at climate-relevant scales. Physical risks and their impacts are worsening due to #ClimateChange. Methodologies to measure these impacts and update modelings consistent with their increased likelihood continue to evolve. The #NGFS Workstream on Climate Scenarios has begun to consider these shifts, as highlighted in this recent article about the challenges of measuring economic losses, written by #ECB Workstream leads. ⬇
Sharing this first part of a two part column written by #NGFS Climate Scenario workstream members on quantifying economic losses caused by climate change (for reference, it also references this paper which takes into account drivers of climate impacts beyond temperature changes: https://lnkd.in/ge9wudwp) #climatescenarios #centralbanking https://lnkd.in/gybrpCZ9

As the global energy transition accelerates, the demand for minerals used in #ElectricTransportation and clean energy technologies continues to grow. However, Indigenous Peoples and communities worldwide have suffered the consequences of irresponsible mining practices for far too long. Now is our chance to reshape mineral supply chains, ensuring that mining supports resilient, prosperous, and healthy communities for generations to come. Our partners, Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance's Davidzo Muchawaya and Pochoy Labog of Business & Human Rights Resource Centre, recently shared their perspectives on the legacy of mining and their hopes for a just, clean energy transition.
