With thanks to our community of funders, implementing partners, and grantees, we're thrilled to release our 2023 annual report, "The Moment is Now." 2023 was a pivotal turning point in the fight for a safer climate future, demonstrating what's possible when we commit to transformative #climate solutions. By the end of the year: 🌍 Drive Electric LEAP Fund had tripled in size and distributed a total of $3.4 million, supporting 23 partner organizations across Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia. 🚢 Our grantees and partners built momentum for the International Maritime Organization's revised #MaritimeShipping strategy, which aims to achieve net-zero emissions by or before 2050. One initiative from our partner, Ports for People, resulted in significant regulatory changes in California’s Zero Emissions Ferry Mandate and inspired similar actions in other countries. 💰 Our Sustainable Finance program team launched a new people- and community-centered strategy under Shelagh Whitley’s leadership. Through this strategic refresh, we're positioned to unlock sustainable finance at scale alongside our global partners and grantees. Physical risks and their impacts are worsening due to #ClimateChange. Methodologies to measure these impacts and update modelings consistent with their increased likelihood continue to evolve. The #NGFS Workstream on Climate Scenarios has begun to consider these shifts, as highlighted in this recent article about the challenges of measuring economic losses, written by #ECB Workstream leads. ⬇

As the global energy transition accelerates, the demand for minerals used in #ElectricTransportation and clean energy technologies continues to grow. However, Indigenous Peoples and communities worldwide have suffered the consequences of irresponsible mining practices for far too long. Now is our chance to reshape mineral supply chains, ensuring that mining supports resilient, prosperous, and healthy communities for generations to come. Our partners, Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance's Davidzo Muchawaya and Pochoy Labog of Business & Human Rights Resource Centre, recently shared their perspectives on the legacy of mining and their hopes for a just, clean energy transition. As Microsoft invests in nascent next-gen technology, our latest story highlights how a low-carbon cement called #LC3 is already being deployed at scale. https://lnkd.in/gb8rGVag
Meet Limestone Calcined Clay Cement (LC3), an emerging innovation transforming the cement industry. 💡 What makes #LC3 so unique? Concrete is responsible for 8% of global carbon emissions. LC3 could reduce these emissions by 40% and prevent 500 million tons of emissions annually by 2030. That’s not all—it’s also more cost-effective. According to ClimateWorks’ Industry Program Strategist Scott Shell, it has “huge potential to scale.” Colombian-based cement manufacturer Cementos Argos is already seeing a huge return on its investment, producing 2 million tons of cement with calcined clay since 2019. Our partner, Karen Scrivener of the LC3 Project - Low Carbon Cement and EPFL, along with other key collaborators, are at the forefront of bringing low-carbon cement to the regions that need it most. However, philanthropy must do more to help it scale. Read how LC3 is coming out on top as a powerful, cost-effective solution in our latest story by Sofia Thanhauser, Industry Fellow ➡ https://lnkd.in/gb8rGVag

Wrapping up a productive New York Climate Week 2024! I had the honor of co-organizing with One Planet Sovereign Wealth Funds pivotal workshop with ClimateWorks Foundation and Mubadala, centered on "Catalyzing Clean Energy Partnerships: Aligning Sovereign Wealth Funds, Institutional Investors, and Governments for a Sustainable Future." We discussed successful strategies to accelerate renewable energy in emerging markets through effective collaboration. Additionally, I took part in the OPSWF Stakeholders Forum, “From Data to Integration,” hosted by Bloomberg Philanthropies, where we examined the crucial role of climate data in shaping investment decisions for sovereign wealth funds, asset managers, and private equity firms. I also had the privilege of attending the Bloomberg Global Business Forum. Key takeaway: Inclusive policy frameworks and community-led capacity building are fundamental to driving a just and equitable energy transition. The launch of the Global Capacity Building Coalition marks a significant step in this direction. As we work towards turning the UAE consensus into a concrete roadmap to triple renewable energy capacity, we need bold public policies that prioritize quality data and robust transmission grid development. These components are essential for unlocking capital for the energy transition, particularly in emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs), as we move "beyond pledges" and into meaningful action. On a personal note, I’m proud to witness African leadership taking center stage in these global discussions. Figures like Damilola Ogunbiyi and Rania A. Al-Mashat are championing sustainability for the continent. It's particularly inspiring to see African women leading these critical conversations, though we still have progress to make in amplifying their voices in such spaces. Grateful for the connections made and looking forward to continuing this important work toward building a just, inclusive, and equitable energy transition. #ClimateFinance #EnergyTransition #Renewables #Sustainability #ClimateWeekNYC #SWFs #CleanEnergy Carlos Quintas Gaitán Jide Ikeako Victor Gathogo Derek Rozycki, Nana Skari Maidugu, PMP Daouii Abouchere Anita Otubu Martin J. Back at my desk after a whirlwind #ClimateWeekNYC. This year’s theme – “It’s Time” – couldn’t be more appropriate for the work of the Drive Electric Campaign community. Earlier this year, we shared the launch of the campaign’s Leapfrogging Partnership to supercharge the EV transition in emerging markets – because it’s time to close the global gap in access to and adoption of zero-emission vehicles. The Leapfrogging Partnership is rooted in the work our partners have been doing for years to enable clean vehicles at the city, national, and international scale. Our strategy has been co-developed with Drive Electric partners over the past 3 years, informed by our gatherings, site visits, expert webinars, and grant learnings. Thanks to support from Quadrature Climate Foundation and other funding partners, we were able to launch the LEAP Fund in 2022 as a portfolio of grants supporting 23 partner organizations across Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia. The Leapfrogging Partnership comes at a critical moment for accelerating #ClimateSolutions. It was energizing to join together with Liz McKeon from IKEA Foundation, Joseph Ryan from Crux Alliance, Saliem Fakir from The African Climate Foundation, Adrian Fernández - Bremauntz from Iniciativa Climática de México, the team from TED's The Audacious Project, and so many other partners for Climate Week NYC. Thank you Climate Group for a great week!
