Moving the needle on Sustainable Fashion x DeepTech 🧵 🪡 The fashion industry is responsible for 2 to 8% of global CO2 emissions – greater than all international flights, maritime and shipping combined.  According to Imperial College London The need to decarbonise the industry is undeniable. Behind every piece of garment we wear is an entire value chain behind it that calls for many opportunities for decarbonisation. This week ClimateHack Ambassadors Kim D. and Denis Frischmann hosted the next edition of ClimateHack Berlin on the intersection of sustainable fashion and DeepTech Together we explored solutions fuelled by scientific and technological advances through the lens of fashion hubs (Max R. Gilgenmann from VORN — The Berlin Fashion Hub), corporate players (Laura Coppen from H&M Group) and start-ups (Mario Osterwalder from circular.fashion) Thank you to everyone who joined us to ask their questions and get involved in scaling the solutions.

How clean is the air you breath? As Kristen Tapping of GOROLLOE says, a pressing issue is that people have no way of knowing the quality of air around them because air pollution is invisible. 🧮 In Numbers 7–9M deaths are attributed to air pollution each year. 61% of them are linked to fossil fuels. What’s more, the global cost of health damages associated with exposure to air pollution is US$8.1 trillion, equivalent to 6.1 percent of global GDP. In fact one study says that less than 1% of our planet has safe levels of air pollution. And with climate change, air quality risks are only getting worse. 🗞️ The Good News Startups are stepping up to the challenge. And analysts project that the air quality monitoring market will reach $7.6B by 2028. An opportunity ripe for investment? These startups think so: actoVent GmbH l Adsorbi l Aerospec l Air Aware Labs l Airly l AirSpeQ l Airveda l Carbon Reform l GOROLLOE l nafas - Air Quality Solutions l Neoplants l Origen Air Purifiers l Persium l Photio l Pluvo l Pollution Solution l Smart Air l The Tyre Collective l U-Earth Biotech l uHoo l Zero2.5 Biotech Pte Ltd 🚀 Opportunities A win-win for climate and health. Considering the long-term health effects from air pollution, clearing the air of harmful pollution would be a major win for human health. Big returns - according to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), every $1 spent on air pollution control yields an estimated $30 in economic benefits. Market opportunity - passive air quality monitoring solutions – as opposed to active air quality improvement solutions – seem to dominate. Which means there’s a wide open market opportunity for innovators willing to explore the latter. ❗️Risks The solutions are often dependent on city-wide infrastructure and requires a complex level of monitoring. Capital intensive - not only do startups need software and hardware, but also access to the smart and expensive minds of environmental experts, engineers, and data scientists. Mostly invisible - air pollution doesn’t strike the same chord with people as more visible man-made damage like plastic islands in the ocean and piles of fast fashion waste in landfills. There's an urgent need for stringent regulation and enforceable air quality regulation for public and work-spaces. Dive into the data, case studies and 3 core classes of pollution with HackTrends: https://lnkd.in/e7eKVG64 With thanks to Peter Havers, Nikunj Dudani and Ava Bahrami for sharing their knowledge on the topic. And to Meg Kendall for the great write up.

Colourless, odourless, and invisible to the naked eye. Methane is a powerful GHG. And while climate conversations are typically hyper-focused on carbon reductions, reducing methane emissions is actually considered the low hanging fruit of climate change mitigation. There are 3 main culprits behind human-caused methane emissions: 🗑️ Landfills 🌾 Agriculture 🛢️ Oil and gas sector With almost half of agriculture-related methane emissions from the digestive process of cattle, also known as enteric fermentation. Reducing methane emissions would make a significant impact on our climate change mitigation efforts. While a report from the United Nations says that a 40%–45% reduction in methane emissions by 2030 is one of the least costly pathways to keep warming below 1.5 ℃. Advanced satellite detection and imaging technologies are providing the critical data that make emissions reductions possible. And these are the startups making it happen: Aeromon  Andium  Bluefield Technologies Satellite Applications Catapult Insight M  GHGSAT  Kayrros  Kuva Systems  LongPath Technologies, Inc.  Mirico  Orbio Earth (YC S23)  Picarro  Project Canary  SeekOps Inc. Tracking the invisible: MRV for Methane Emissions Methane emissions from U.S. oil and gas facilities are 3x higher than predicted by official government estimates, approx. 3% of total flows on average, making the need for reliable measurement rather than estimation even more acute. At these levels of “leakage” natural gas could be considered a “dirtier” fuel than coal, making methane reduction critical in the industry. Bob Flint of Mirico tells us. We must reduce methane emissions to meet our climate goals. But it’s hard to manage what isn’t measured. That’s why startups are hard at work innovating new ways to monitor and track this invisible gas that is rapidly warming our atmosphere. Here's how: Aeromon (fugitive emission measurements, Finland)  Andium (methane monitoring for wellsites, USA)  Bluefield Technologies (methane leak monitoring, USA)  Satellite Applications Catapult (methane monitoring, UK)  Insight M (methane emissions management, USA)  GHGSAT (industrial emissions monitoring, Canada)  Kayrros (methane super emitter tracking, France)  Kuva Systems (methane monitoring and quantification, USA)  LongPath Technologies, Inc. (continuous methane emission monitoring, USA)   Mirico (high sensitivity laser technology for real time gas sensing, UK)  Orbio Earth (YC S23) (actionable methane intelligence, USA)  Picarro (methane emissions management, USA)  Project Canary (emissions intelligence, USA)  SeekOps Inc. (gas emissions inspection ops, USA) Take a read of the full report: https://lnkd.in/e2SWnaT5
