The Climate Drift Career Accelerator for mid-career & executives kicked off. The first round of feedback is solid 🔥 Here are my top 3 from our members: 1️⃣ “I’ve gotten tremendous value out of the course; specifically the action-oriented nature of the course (learning doing, not just learning) and the orientation towards landing a career in climate and HOW to do it” 2️⃣ “The quality and access to the speakers so far has been unparalleled (and I've done programs with [multiple other climate education programs]).” 3️⃣ 10 out of 10: The content is in-depth and interesting, and gives the cohort opportunities to get involved by tackling challenges hands-on (which in my opinion, is the best way to learn!) If you want to make a difference and bring your talent into climate. Apply to our May ’24 cohort and join the Climate Drift community. More info and how to apply here: https://lnkd.in/eN8aCHsC

Up-skilling 1M people into climate | Founder | Last exit at $750M | I break down climate solutions so 5th graders understand them

FREE Course: Find Your Climate Niche 😎 5-10min reading bursts. Single Climate Sector Focus. Compact knowledge. Spread out over a few weeks. Self-paced and email based. With 2 to 3 learning mails per week. If I can, I'll add a curated deep-dive resource library at the end of the course 🤓 ❓Why ❓ Because finding your climate niche is the first step on the journey into the Climate Economy. And so many people don’t know how to take that first step. Or get lost in way too much content 😢 This is your way of cutting through the noise. And answer the only question that matters: 👉 Is this climate sub-sector for me or not? If you want to be a part of this free course. → Comment on this message, tag somebody, and repost it. You help me & I help you 🙏 👉 If we get 100 people on the email list I create the first course (and invite you). (link to sign-up is in the first comment).

Transitioning from a linear to a circular economy is no small feat—it requires a fundamental shift in how we think about consumption and business. Enter Nadia Setiabudi, a digital and e-commerce veteran with 15 years of experience working with giants like Nike, TOMS, and adidas. In this first part of her three-part challenge, she maps out the landscape of consumption, from its psychological roots to the changing patterns of Gen Z, and explores how businesses and governments can drive sustainable change. This is a roadmap for consumers, businesses, and policymakers to collaboratively reshape our economic model. 🌊 Dive deeper in the link in the comments

I got in BIG trouble...with the recycling police. 2x in a row! 🤯😭 For context: I’m in a magical, far away place. Here recycling rates are at around 80% (US has 30%). You get precise instructions on what you can recycle. And are expected to participate. Or you get in trouble. For contrast: 1️⃣ Back Home I’m not a rookie. I recycle: Plastics → blue recycling bin. Compost → green bin. Trash → black bin. Side note: US bins are huge…more space than an airline seat. 🤯 I spent less than 4 minutes per week dealing with my trash. 2️⃣ Magical Recycling Place I read up on the rules. I washed all my plastic containers. I removed caps, peeled labels, packed compost in correct bag. I sorted everything in the correct bin and flattened all my cardboard. Made sure it’s easy to grab too. This took me 30 minutes. (I never spent 30 minutes dealing with my weekly trash in my entire life!! 🤯) ❓The result ❓ I got slapped in the face. All my recycling trash stayed in front of my house. 100% denied. 😱 Neighbors with empty bins judging my full bins. I imagine them thinking: 👉 “He doesn’t care for the environment and can’t deal with his trash. What a looser!” 😳 So I ask for help. I research. I learn: → Only #1, #3 and #5 plastics can be recycled. → Remove screw tops from glass bottles. → Soft plastics are hard to recycle. → Yoghurt lids gotta stay out. → Remove all food residue. Then I try again. And do something I never thought possible. 👉 I celebrate after they accept ALL my recycling trash, and take it away. 🥳 And then I immediately wonder? Why are trash bins so huge in the US? Why can’t we have precise recycling rules to follow? Why don’t we give our trash pick-up crews the power to say “No!”? And make non recycled “end trash” really expensive. And inconvenient to even get a bag for it? But recycling is always free of charge. ❓Why am I sharing this❓ Because we are closer to the circular economy than we think. But it takes work. And a lot of effort from all of us. Let’s go 🙌 ——— PS. I’m launching a FREE email-based learning course about specific climate sectors. And circular economy is high up on the list. If you want to be part of it ... 👉 Link to the invite list is in the comments.

95% of people miss this when networking. I can't figure out why 🤷♂️ It’s super simple. And pays off big time. I tell everyone who asks me for career advice: 👉 In a few months, take 5 minutes, reflect on your your journey, tell me what worked for you? I’m basically inviting you to another touch point. Yes, you sent me a thank you message. But why not send another message in a few months. That’s so easy to do. Allows you to be top-of-mind, again. It’s so hard remembering a single conversation 3 months down the line. But multiple touch points are easy to remember. Today I got a message with just that: —— 👉 “Marco, I wanted to reach out to say thank you for taking the time to chat earlier this year! Your advice really helped me, and you suggested that I got in touch with you after some time to let you know what had worked for me.

The advice that was particularly helpful was:

→ Learn the jargon of the industry. It really helped me to build rapport and connect with others in the industry fast.
→ Focus on networking opportunities: I started volunteering and now have paid work delivering climate workshops to corporates...which has dramatically improved my network.
→ I have improved confidence and community support now to work in climate areas that I am particularly passionate about (regen agriculture circular food economies).” —— Not only is this such a nice email to get. But it makes me want to help even more. Even though there wasn’t a single ask in this email. Networking is all about building relationships. Play to long game. It works 🙌 —— PS. If you've been following tech (or any) news lately, you've undoubtedly noticed we've entered the age of AI. AI has also become the hottest topic in climate circles. Every conversation with investors and utilities seems to circle back to AI these days. Here's why: 🔋 Datacenters are using more and more energy. 📈 The Electric Power Research Institute predicts that data centers could consume 9% of U.S. power generation by 2030. 🌡️ Tech giants heavily investing in AI, like Microsoft and Google, are missing their climate goals. ⚡ Utilities are witnessing demand spiking and struggling to find solutions. And here's the kicker: when you look at AI companies, their sustainability strategies are mostly non existent. That's why we've brought in Tracy Cheung. With her background leading sustainability at AI company Cruise and over a decade of experience at the largest U.S. utility, she's uniquely positioned to tackle this critical issue. In this deep dive, we're looking at: 📊 The current state of AI sustainability 🚧 Challenges AI companies face in going green 🔍 Finding comparables: How tech giants are benchmarking their sustainability efforts 💰 The economic upside of sustainable AI 🛠️ Solutions to rein in AI's carbon footprint 🗺️ A sustainability roadmap for AI companies This is a tactical guide for AI companies who've been too busy disrupting industries to notice they might be disrupting the climate too. 🌊 Let's dive in the link in the comments

At the end of this year’s #climateweek we are sharing Kristina Varaksina's powerful photograph "The Seashore is No Longer Here," winner of the Photography4Humanity Prize 2023. Taken in Karakalpakstan, Uzbekistan, shows schoolgirls standing in an abandoned seaport town. Next to them, an installation marks where the Aral Sea's shoreline once reached – a reminder of what's been lost to environmental change. Once the world's fourth-largest lake, the Aral Sea has lost 90% of its volume since the 1960s due to water diversion for agriculture. Varaksina's photograph doesn't just document this ecological disaster – it captures its human cost, forcing us to confront the legacy we're leaving for future generations. What steps can we take to ensure that the next generation doesn't inherit more 'lost seas'?
