Resourcing grassroots climate solutions

About us

The CLIMA Fund is a collaboration between Global Greengrants Fund, Grassroots International, Thousand Currents, and Urgent Action Fund for Women’s Human Rights — a like-minded community funding grassroots movements to cool the planet and build resilience around the globe. Working together, we give influential funders a simple and effective way to invest in grassroots climate change movements. In short, CLIMA Fund mobilizes philanthropy by investing in on-the-ground leaders behind the most sustainable and effective solutions to our global climate crisis. Collectively, the CLIMA Fund members have: - annual budgets of >$64 million - given >20,000 grants to grassroots movement organizations - reached 168 countries - over 130 years of experience in grassroots grant-making Billions have been invested in climate work, yet emissions continue to rise. Why? Because much like development, recovery, and rebuilding efforts, traditional funding schemes overlook valid answers from the people most affected by the problem. We’re different: the CLIMA Fund believes that climate-impacted communities also hold the most direct answers to combating its effects. For example, the CLIMA Fund places special emphasis on women’s leadership, acknowledging the role women play at the nexus of resistance, strategy, leadership, and care of land and water. We believe that without the liberation of women leaders who can exert their power and share wisdom at the grassroots and global level, there can be little substantive, systemic change. Our ultimate mission? Build and harness the collective power of climate-impacted communities to address the drivers of the challenges facing our communities today and tackle this crisis together. We fund climate action in the following areas: - Indigenous Defenders - Community Governance of Renewables - Agroecology - Direct Resistance of Extractive Industries

🌱 Last week, the CLIMA Fund (of which we are a member) highlighted compelling stories from grantee partners, shedding light on the remarkable efforts of youth-led climate justice movements. These initiatives are not only advancing solutions at the critical intersection of climate, racial, and economic justice, but they're also embodying the healing potential of collective action. In our ongoing discourse on healing, it's important to acknowledge the  impact of youth in rejuvenating our planet. Just as we address the emotional and psycho-social scars left by violence and disasters, we must embrace and celebrate the transformative influence of youth-driven climate activism. They are the catalysts for change, driving forward solutions that promise a sustainable and equitable future for generations to come. Let's continue to amplify their voices and support their efforts as we work towards a brighter, greener tomorrow. 🌍💚 The CLIMA Fund is a joint project of Grassroots International, Thousand Currents, Global Greengrants Fund, and Urgent Action Fund for Feminist Activism. #ClimateJustice #YouthActivism #HealingOurPlanet

We’re back with the last story (for now) from our series spotlighting youth movements addressing the root causes of our climate crisis and advancing holistic solutions! Women Volunteers for Peace (WOVOP) supports young women's leadership in the Kenyan food and waste processing sectors. Their work trains young women to identify linkages across the local ecosystem and utilize local resources to improve their livelihoods. WOVOP’s work uplifts women and girls’ well-being and security in western Kenya. Thank you for following along! Today, we are spotlighting Jeunes Volontaires pour l'environnement - côte d'ivoire, a Thousand Currents and Global Greengrants Fund partner, which is creating a future of food rooted in climate justice principles! JVE is training youth on Indigenous knowledge systems and peasant agroecology. In November 2023, JVE hosted the fifth edition of its Yalitia Boot Camp to train 30 young people from 7 countries to exist in cooperation with our environment and create links of solidarity among peasants across the world. The CLIMA Fund is so proud to support JVE’s excellent work! Come back tomorrow to learn how young women in Kenya are closing the gender gap in the country’s food production and waste management systems.

We are proud to resource youth-led climate justice movements advancing high-impact solutions at the intersection of climate, racial, and economic justice. This week, we’re highlighting five stories of youth climate leadership that show us that a better world is possible! As the DRC government sanctions oil and gas projects in sensitive ecosystems and protected areas, CLIMA Fund partners Mouvement de Jeunes pour la Protection de l’Environnement (MJPE) and Association des Jeunes Visionnaire pour le développement du Congo (AJVDC) are advocating for the protection of the rich biodiversity and livelihoods of local Congolese communities. MJPE’s work highlights the irreversible consequences of government-sanctioned projects – fossil fuel extraction is incompatible with an ambition to address the climate crisis, uphold environmental protection laws, and respect the rights of local communities. AJVDC is creating local management committees around Virunga National Park (PNVi) to ensure a permanent watch through mobilization and advocacy. Come back tomorrow to learn how a girl-led Kyrgyz organization is advocating for gender and environmental justice!
