We deeply support teachers and know that training in evidence-based reading instruction is critical to successful implementation in the classroom. At the same time, we reject national teacher union leader Randi Weingarten’s call for curriculum exemptions for schools, saying teachers are not ready. We have more faith in our teachers! Weingarten continues to promote a path that has failed children (70% of children still read below grade-level in 3rd grade). The union and all other educational organizations should urgently work together to be part of the solution and put in place teacher training and support - not slow down or prevent what we know works.
