For Akron resident Harvey Sterns, volunteering is something his parents and other family members were passionate about, igniting his love for giving back to the community. One of Sterns’ first memories of volunteering is when he taught Sunday school and kindergarten at his local synagogue in Waterville, Maine while he was in high school, he told the Cleveland Jewish News. He continued volunteering when he moved to Akron in 1972, to take a job as a professor of psychology at The University of Akron, where he served as a board member of VANTAGE Aging’s Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, he said. Prior to his retirement, he also served as the director of the Institute for Life-Span Development and Gerontology at The University of Akron, according to The University of Akron website. Today, Sterns co-chairs Age-Friendly Summit County and has returned to his position as chairman on the Commission on Aging for the city of Akron.

Almost 86 years after Superman, the impetus for the modern-day superhero genre was created in Cleveland, his influence is finding its way back to The Land. When Michael Sangiacomo, a former reporter for The Plain Dealer and self-proclaimed comic book nerd, came to Cleveland in 1989, he realized the city’s connection to the “Man of Steel” was apathetic, he said. Fed up, he wrote an article in 2007 demanding Cleveland do something to honor and celebrate the creation of Superman in Cleveland and he stayed persistent in his quest to bring Superman home. “Today, we announced the start of the fundraising effort to raise at least $2.3 million – hopefully $2.5 million – to make this dream come true, and yes, we believe that a man can fly,” Sangiacomo, who founded the SIEGEL & SHUSTER SOCIETY in 2007, a nonprofit organization to honor the creators of Superman, said at a June 20 news conference at the Cleveland History Center. The project will place a stainless-steel statue of Superman; life-size bronze statues of Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster; the inspiration for Lois Lane, a statue of Siegel’s wife Joanne Siegel; and a nearby phone booth at the center of the Siegel and Shuster Tribute Plaza outside the Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland.

When most people think of antisemitic incidents, they refer to antisemitism during World War II and the Holocaust, where antisemitism involved wielding a swastika or engaging in Nazi propaganda. However, Sarah Hurwitz, author and former political speechwriter, said while people often think of antisemitism as the same now, it is not, and they need to realize antisemitism can come in many forms and from any kind of person. Hurwitz joined Hillel International President and CEO Adam Lehman at Cleveland Hillel’s annual meeting for its keynote presentation, “Critical Conversations: The New Realities and New Approaches to Jewish Life on Campus,” on June 27 at Suburban Temple-Kol Ami in Beachwood.

As colleges and universities prepare for the upcoming school year, Hillels around the world are reflecting on the past academic year – both the good and the bad. “This past year, Jewish students faced truly unprecedented conditions on campus,” Adam Lehman, president and CEO of Hillel International, told the Cleveland Jewish News on June 20. “At Hillel International, we recorded more than 1,800 total incidences of campus antisemitism (in the United States).” This total represented a 700% year-to-year increase, Lehman said. The incidents from the 2023-2024 school year included targeted harassment, intimidation, marginalization and in more than 65 cases, physical harassment and assault.

Ian Friedman witnessed the community’s desire for a secure environment to learn and practice firearm handling and self-defense skills following the Oct. 7, 2023, surprise attack on Israel by Hamas, he told the Cleveland Jewish News. Prompted by growing concerns for the safety of the Jewish community, friends and neighbors and a global rise in antisemitism, Friedman, with business partner John McCreery, purchased First Strike Range & Gun Shop in Newbury in February. “The main goal for the space is to have a place where people from all different communities can come and relax, train and socialize with other like-minded individuals,” Friedman, managing partner of Friedman Nemecek Long & Grant, L.L.C. in Cleveland, said.
