When we think of resilience and grit, we think of one of our anesthesiologists Dr. Sara Whittingham. Over the weekend Sara crossed the finish lines at the 100m and 200m races during the U.S. Paralympic Track & Field trials. It was her first time competing, and although she experienced challenges during the events, she never quit. Sara is an Air Force Academy graduate and 20-year veteran, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in November 2020, when she was 46 years old. A mother of two teenage girls and a lifelong athlete, she uses exercise and medication to slow disease progression. She was involved in one of our research studies called CYCLE. It required her and other participants to use an exercise bike, at home, to determine if long-term, high-intensity aerobic exercise can slow the advancement of Parkinson’s. She says her treatment regimen allows her to feel like a runner again. Among a number of races Sara has competed in, she most recently completed the 2023 IRONMAN World Championship and finished the 2024 Boston Marathon. Sara says, "There are thousands of people with Parkinson's working and living full lives. Spend energy thinking about what you’re grateful for. It helps keep you optimistic and moving in a positive direction. Set outrageous goals, and just go for it!” We look forward to sharing Sara’s next venture.
