Cleveland-Cliffs announced plans to establish a new electrical distribution transformer production plant in Weirton, West Virginia. Lourenco Goncalves, Cleveland-Cliffs' Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer hosted a press conference with West Virginia Governor Jim Justice and other elected officials in Weirton. The press conference highlighted Cleveland-Cliffs’ investment to repurpose its Half Moon Warehouse in Weirton to commence production of three-phase distribution transformers used in electric power distribution systems. This investment will result in reemployment opportunities for 600 USW-represented workers from the indefinitely idled Weirton tinplate mill. The new plant will also generate additional demand for American-made Grain Oriented Electrical Steel (GOES) produced at Cleveland-Cliffs’ Butler Works steel mill in Butler, Pennsylvania, as well as for Cleveland-Cliffs’ stainless and carbon steel products used in the manufacturing of distribution transformers.

During the visit, Secretary Granholm toured the plant and met with Cleveland-Cliffs’ Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Lourenco Goncalves, company officials, employees as well as union leaders from the United Auto Workers (UAW), the United Steelworkers (USW) and the International Association of Machinists (IAM). Cleveland-Cliffs hosted Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Jennifer Granholm at its Middletown Works operation, where she held a press conference on newly-announced federal funding for U.S. industrial decarbonization projects. Two of Cleveland-Cliffs' projects have been selected for award negotiations for up to $575 million in total funding from the United States Department of Energy (DOE) to pursue two decarbonization investments at Middletown Works in Ohio and Butler Works in Pennsylvania. Following successful negotiations, these projects will allow for substantial reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the Cliffs’ footprint and will also create efficiencies that meaningfully drive down operating costs while securing and growing good-paying Union jobs. This federal funding is being made available through DOE’s Industrial Demonstrations Program funded through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the Inflation Reduction Act; more information on the program can be found on the DoE's website. More information on the Middletown Works and Butler Works projects are available through the Cleveland-Cliffs news release: https://lnkd.in/ge_9g357.
