As we face the challenges of a warming world, sustainable cooling has become more important than ever, from keeping us safe and comfortable when it’s hot outside to preserving the medicines we rely on and the food we eat. By scaling up the deployment of efficient, climate-friendly, and affordable cooling solutions, we can simultaneously minimize our climate impact while building resilience to rising temperatures. As millions, if not billions, of people worldwide are battling above-average temperatures, it's vital that sustainable cooling solutions are rolled out at scale and speed. About us
Clean Cooling Collaborative (formerly K-CEP) is an initiative of ClimateWorks Foundation focused on increasing access to efficient, climate-friendly cooling. In 2016, leading climate foundations collaborated ahead of the Montreal Protocol meeting in Kigali, Rwanda, and pledged more than $50 million to create the largest-ever fund of its kind for action on efficient, climate-friendly cooling. The following spring, the Kigali Cooling Efficiency Program (K-CEP) was born, under the management of a new secretariat assembled by and housed within the ClimateWorks Foundation. Under the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, 197 countries committed to cut hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) production and consumption by more than 80% by mid-century. The secretariat was charged with strategically programming interventions for the funds under a directive to advance appliance efficiency reforms alongside efforts to support the implementation of the new global HFC phase down under the Kigali Amendment. In 2021, we refreshed our strategy and updated our name to reflect our revised scope of work. Now, as the Clean Cooling Collaborative, we will continue to build on our past efforts to place cooling on the global agenda by catalyzing organizations, institutions, companies, and governments to bring efficient, climate-friendly policies, financing, and technology solutions to the world.

China is facing hotter and longer heat waves due to the climate crisis. Within 30 years, experts warn that maximum temperatures across the country could rise by 1.7-2.8°C (3-5°F). If global greenhouse gas emissions remain high, extreme heat events expected to occur once every 50 years in China could happen every other year by 2100. As temperatures continue to rise and extreme heat becomes more common, we must secure a future where everyone has access to the cooling they need. Researchers at UCL have found that cool roofs are a more impactful passive cooling solution in London than green roofs, reducing temperatures by 1.2° C (2.2° F) on average. London is just one of many cities exploring how different types of roofs can help mitigate urban heat islands. In addition to heat mitigation benefits, cool roofs are also easier and cheaper to install and maintain compared to green roofs, which require higher investment costs and water to maintain efficacy. As global temperatures continue to rise, an increasing number of people will turn to air conditioning to stay cool (if they can afford to). According to data from The Washington Post, around 71% of summer days in the U.S. now require AC, up from 66% in the early 1980s. By 2060, this figure could reach up to 87%. While AC brings a host of benefits to society, it can also place a major strain on power grids and our climate. We must ensure that our growing demand for AC is met with super-efficient, climate-friendly technologies. Passive cooling techniques must also be deployed to reduce the need for air conditioning by naturally improving thermal comfort. How many days will you need AC where you live? While access to cooling is often taken for granted by many in countries like the U.S. – where most households have some form of air conditioning – roughly 1,500 people in the country still die each year from the impacts of extreme heat. In fact, heat waves claim more lives in the U.S. than any other weather-related event. With some 130 million people across western states currently under an extreme heat warning, it’s essential that we take urgent action to increase access to affordable, efficient, and climate-friendly cooling solutions, particularly for those who face the most significant risks. This need extends far beyond the U.S., with more than 1.1 billion people globally considered to be at high risk from a lack of access to cooling. As the world continues to warm and extreme heat events become more frequent and severe, we must secure clean cooling for all. Clean Cooling Collaborative reposted this
#Extremeheat is becoming more frequent and deadly each year, as tragically demonstrated by the heatwave that's killed 1,300 people during this year's Hajj pilgrimage. We can't accept this as our new normal. So, what can we do to better protect people on a rapidly warming planet? Accelerating all our efforts to stop #ClimatePollution is essential, and we must also address the impacts of the crisis already affecting so many. This includes expanding sustainable and affordable cooling solutions, such as: 1️⃣ #PassiveCooling: Embracing passive cooling strategies is critical with the demand for air conditioning skyrocketing, particularly in emerging economies. ClimateWorks Foundation's partner Beta Paramita of Be Cool Indonesia is leading the charge with Cool Roofs, a groundbreaking passive cooling technique. Be Cool Indonesia uses a specially formulated paint that reflects the sun’s rays, lowering maximum indoor temperatures in low-rise buildings by 2-4° C (4-7° F) on average. https://lnkd.in/d8GHNk4t 2️⃣ #SustainableCooling: Access to #Cooling is no longer a luxury. It is a necessity, but inefficient ACs gobble energy, stress the grid, and put out harmful climate pollution. "It's a vicious circle,” says Sneha Sachar LEED AP, Associate Director at Clean Cooling Collaborative, “We cool the interior, but heat the outside, which generates the need for more cooling.” https://lnkd.in/dA2uUtUw Super efficient #cooling can keep people cool while lowering climate impacts and reducing pressure on grids. However, we need to do more to bring these innovations to market. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/d8zvZfc7 [3] #HeatInsurance: Climate Resilience for All, with support from ClimateWorks Foundation and others, has recently launched the Women’s Climate Shock Insurance and Livelihood Initiative, aimed at supporting women working in the informal sector in India. Thanks to the program, tens of thousands of women had the option to take a break from work once temperatures reached dangerous highs in the recent heatwave and receive compensation equivalent to a portion of their daily wages. Today is the last day for submitting concept notes for our Passive Cooling in Southeast Asia request for proposals ⏰ If you have a scalable project that integrates passive cooling strategies and solutions into residential buildings in the region, let us know! More info ⬇ #PassiveCooling #CoolingForAll #ClimateResilience #BuidlingDesign #Architecture #SoutheastAsia #RequestForProposals #ClimatePhilanthropy
❗Request for Proposals❗ We are looking to identify and support innovative, scalable projects that integrate passive cooling strategies and solutions into residential buildings in Southeast Asia. These buildings represent the largest share of energy consumption in the ASEAN building sector. With rising temperatures, rapid urbanization, and increasing incomes, the rapidly growing demand for cooling is exacerbating the situation, posing risks to a currently carbon-intensive energy system and causing more global warming. Through this RFP, we seek to stimulate innovative, actionable projects or initiatives that fill critical gaps on the ground, offering models that promote passive cooling and sustainable building practices in Southeast Asia’s residential building sector, focusing on ultra-low, low-, and middle-income groups. Access to effective cooling has saved tens of thousands of lives over recent years. However, the rising demand for air conditioning is exacerbating the climate crisis while also remaining unobtainable to many heat-vulnerable communities. How can we ensure that no one is left behind and that the growth in cooling demand does not harm the climate? Sustainable solutions like passive cooling measures and super-efficient, climate-friendly technologies offer a win-win. To ensure impact, coherent policy packages, supported by the necessary financing, are also needed across all jurisdictions.
