#Extremeheat is becoming more frequent and deadly each year, as tragically demonstrated by the heatwave that's killed 1,300 people during this year's Hajj pilgrimage. We can't accept this as our new normal. So, what can we do to better protect people on a rapidly warming planet? Accelerating all our efforts to stop #ClimatePollution is essential, and we must also address the impacts of the crisis already affecting so many. This includes expanding sustainable and affordable cooling solutions, such as:   1️⃣ #PassiveCooling: Embracing passive cooling strategies is critical with the demand for air conditioning skyrocketing, particularly in emerging economies. ClimateWorks Foundation's partner Beta Paramita of Be Cool Indonesia is leading the charge with Cool Roofs, a groundbreaking passive cooling technique. Be Cool Indonesia uses a specially formulated paint that reflects the sun’s rays, lowering maximum indoor temperatures in low-rise buildings by 2-4° C (4-7° F) on average. https://lnkd.in/d8GHNk4t 2️⃣ #SustainableCooling: Access to #Cooling is no longer a luxury. Thanks to the program, tens of thousands of women had the option to take a break from work once temperatures reached dangerous highs in the recent heatwave and receive compensation equivalent to a portion of their daily wages. Access to effective cooling has saved tens of thousands of lives over recent years. However, the rising demand for air conditioning is exacerbating the climate crisis while also remaining unobtainable to many heat-vulnerable communities. How can we ensure that no one is left behind and that the growth in cooling demand does not harm the climate? Sustainable solutions like passive cooling measures and super-efficient, climate-friendly technologies offer a win-win. To ensure impact, coherent policy packages, supported by the necessary financing, are also needed across all jurisdictions. India is facing its most prolonged heatwave since records began, while across the globe, high temps threaten Mexico’s wildlife. These are only a few examples. As the planet warms, demand for cooling will surge, producing yet more carbon emissions in a vicious spiral. We have dedicated a total of US$1.5 million to support innovative, scalable projects that integrate passive cooling strategies and solutions into residential buildings in Southeast Asia. These buildings represent the largest share of energy consumption in the ASEAN building sector. With rising temperatures, rapid urbanization, and increasing incomes, the rapidly growing demand for cooling is exacerbating the situation, posing risks to a currently carbon-intensive energy system and causing more global warming. Through this RFP, we seek to stimulate innovative, actionable projects or initiatives that fill critical gaps on the ground, offering models that promote passive cooling and sustainable building practices in Southeast Asia’s residential building sector, focusing on ultra-low, low-, and middle-income groups. With scorching temperatures persisting globally, the importance of more efficient, climate-friendly cooling cannot be underestimated. While super-efficient cooling technologies with better dehumidification performance exist, more work is needed to bring these innovations to market and ensure our future cooling demands can be met without exacerbating the climate crisis. Fortunately, the Global Cooling Efficiency Accelerator is working on establishing the right pre-conditions to address several supply and demand barriers to make these products commercially available. Did you know that the world's cities are heating up at twice the global average rate due to the urban heat island effect? This phenomenon occurs when urban areas become hotter due to factors like less green space, more heat-absorbing materials, and waste heat from human activities. Scaling up the use of nature-based and passive cooling solutions in cities could reduce urban temperatures by multiple degrees. Not only would this improve thermal comfort for residents (and save lives!), but this could also cut cooling-related energy demand and greenhouse gas emissions by reducing reliance on air conditioning.
