The waste sector is one of the world’s largest #methane emitters, accounting for 20% of the global total with the majority stemming from solid waste decaying in dumpsites and landfills. Cutting methane emissions from waste can slow the pace of global warming, but local governments face enormous challenges in managing the ever-growing waste streams to collect, treat, and dispose of waste in a way that mitigates methane emissions. That’s why CATF and other organizations began hosting Waste Clinics – workshops to help key stakeholders identify their most pressing challenges when it comes to solid waste management and find potential solutions to #CutMethaneEmissions. CATF's Paula García Holley, Isabel Garzón Alvear, Zitely Tzompa, and Kait Siegel provide best practices for conducting Waste Clinics from their experience in #Colombia, #Mexico, and #Ecuador – and detail how these workshops result in waste management improvements and policy changes to #CutMethane. https://lnkd.in/eTeP2KAs

This week, CATF’s Director of Superhot Rock Energy, Terra Rogers, provided testimony before the U.S. House Committee on Natural Resources in support of a bipartisan bill to enable the research and development needed to advance superhot rock #geothermal energy. The Supercritical Geothermal Research and Development Act would enable the research and development of superhot rock energy, a clean firm energy source with the potential to transform our global energy system. By promoting targeted public and private research, breaking down siloes, and leveraging the vast subsurface expertise that already exists in the U.S., this legislation does exactly what is needed to boost the momentum for next-generation geothermal energy. https://lnkd.in/eiBuCujf

Cutting emissions from super pollutant greenhouse gases – including #methane – is one of the fastest ways to tackle climate change. Yesterday, the Biden-Harris administration announced new actions to detect and reduce these climate super pollutants. At The White House Super Pollutants Summit, the administration highlighted efforts to advance detection and reporting of super pollutants, industry leadership to reduce nitrous oxide emissions, and new initiatives to reduce domestic and global #methane emissions. Since many of these climate super pollutants are relatively short-lived in the atmosphere, reducing emissions from them today can have an impact on global warming in our lifetimes – improving the climate and public health. https://lnkd.in/dzCewUTk

How can we ensure a safe and timely decarbonization process to achieve climate goals while promoting industrial competitiveness and protecting communities? Yesterday, CATF's Director of Central and Eastern Europe, Tamara Lagurashvili, moderated a panel at the Atlantic Council's fifth meeting of the Partnership for Transatlantic Energy and Climate Cooperation (#PTECC) in Bucharest, #Romania on how the private sector and governments can adequately protect and prepare communities throughout the energy transition. Watch the full panel with Former Minister of Energy of Romania, Member of the European Parliament Virgil Daniel Popescu; First State Secretary, Ministry of Economy of Slovak Republic Kamil Sasko; and Monsson's Head of Mergers & Acquisitions Sebastian-Petre ENACHE: https://lnkd.in/dWAQfjEf

Electric transmission is essential for a reliable grid and a clean energy future. Our recent report with the Niskanen Center reveals how federal permitting, particularly Environmental Impact Statements (EIS), significantly impacts project timelines. From 2010-2020, while only 3.5% of projects required an EIS, these accounted for 26% of new transmission line miles. With the U.S. needing to triple its transmission capacity, improving federal permitting processes is crucial. That's where CITAP comes in. Launched in April 2024 by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), this program streamlines permitting, sets a 2-year review standard, and centralizes processes. Our analysis suggests CITAP could cut federal permitting time by more than half. From 2010-2020, CITAP could have avoided 66 years in federal permitting time if implemented effectively, underscoring how much time could be saved through improved permitting processes. Moving forward, success will depend on implementation and developer participation. https://lnkd.in/eKR5UXA3

Today, US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced awards of the first-of-its-kind Climate Pollution Reduction Grants (CPRG) – a historic step to reduce emissions and bolster state economies. Totaling $4.3 billion, this competitive implementation funding was included in the #InflationReductionAct and will support states' and municipalities' greenhouse gas reduction strategies. The CPRG program has already delivered impressive results. In addition to today’s awards announcement for specific projects, 46 states and many tribes and municipalities used planning grants earlier in the CPRG process to develop their own unique climate plans. CATF works with states to develop and implement customized emission-reduction strategies and has developed resources to help states identify other potential funding streams for clean trucks, fuel corridors, industrial decarbonization, and more. https://lnkd.in/eaw4GSRb

The potential of Central and Eastern Europe is often overlooked. While the region still has work to do to reduce its emission intensity, it offers real opportunities to become a key voice in Europe’s energy transition. Join CATF’s upcoming webinar series as we explore the potential of the #CEE region with leading experts, including how Central and Eastern Europe can charter a path toward resilient decarbonisation and economic growth. #CEETalks

This week, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) awarded the first #hydrogen hub in #California – marking a significant step forward in achieving U.S. decarbonization goals and bolstering the U.S. hydrogen market, particularly for hard-to-abate sectors like transportation. Led by the Alliance for Renewable Clean Hydrogen Energy Systems (ARCHES), the hub is primarily focused on developing electrolytic, alongside some biogenic, hydrogen production to decarbonize aspects of the transportation sector, including heavy-duty trucking and port operations. https://lnkd.in/ewRag9Gi
