Data center AI revolution is the key topic at this week’s Datacloud USA event in Austin, Texas. Keynote speech from Joseph Kava at Google data centers team pointed to additional challenges of: * Massive growth in energy demand for racks in data centers – now planning for 2-300kW per rack a 10x increase in recent years. * Demand requirements for data centers are highly variable and difficult to balance demand with corresponding energy usage * Data centers installed today should last for 20-30 years, however difficulty to predict technological changes and design accordingly * Cooling system innovation moving from air cooling to hybrid air/water cooling and ultimately to fully water cooled if economical. * Data centers focussing on “training” are typically in remote areas, requirements for “serving” data centers closer to major metropolitan areas. Can remote data centers be ultimately repurposed or not? * Hoarding of power generation equipment by data center operators becoming a challenge to natural operation of markets * Growth in AI only just starting and is set to grow as autonomous vehicles and healthcare providers move to AI-based systems. Gas based captive energy solutions are growing in importance for data centers. Microgrids integrating multiple generation and storage technologies now “viable” for the industry and “work”. Lively meeting in New York yesterday at the North East Chapter of the U.S. Combined Heat and Power Alliance. New York faces a potential energy crunch in 2030-33, where electricity demand increases outstrip spare capacity. Barriers are being lowered for the deployment of CHP in New York's buildings. Manufacturers are also growing in acceptance of CHP as a way to achieve carbon emission reductions and support energy resilience at a cost-effective price. Insightful discussions took place regarding challenges for reporting CHP using average grid CO2 emissions. Project accounting is permissible in carbon accounting as a valid solution to calculating the actual carbon benefits of CHP compared to marginal grid emissions. Hans Korteweg from COGEN World Coalition and COGEN Europe delivered additional presentations, shedding light on the market for CHP in the EU and how CHP can support emissions reduction in the data center and flexible generation sectors.
