At Clark Schaefer Hackett, our team is what sets us apart. Through the CSH Spotlight series, we’re giving you a behind-the-scenes look at the talented individuals who power our success. We’ve asked them to answer some fun and thought-provoking questions, and now we’re excited to share their unique stories and perspectives with you.
Meet Brett Kohlmayer, CPA, Manager of Assurance, at our office in Cincinnati.
Q: When did you join CSH?
A: I interned at CSH in 2015, then started full-time in December 2016.
Q: What does a typical day look like?
A: Usually, I start each day with a cup of coffee and a walk around the neighborhood with my dog, Bolt. I usually vary between visiting clients, going to the office and working from home but each day usually involves working with my team to progress through whatever the week's task is. I usually wrap up my day with either a run, bike ride or another walk with Bolt, followed up with some video games.
Q: Where did you go to school, and what did you study?
A: I went to THE (I joke) Ohio State University, where I got a BSBA in Business with a specialization in accounting and a minor in Computer Information Systems.
Q: Which of CSH’s REAL Values (Respect, Excellence, Accountability, Leadership) do you value most?
A: While I think all the values are close to equally important, I would place Leadership at the top. I think leadership sets the bar for everyone else in an organization and gives everyone involved an example to emulate and mold their own leadership style.
Q: What makes your workday exciting?
A: I really enjoy seeing the staff I work with grow and develop their skills. Seeing someone have that "aha" moment makes the time spent teaching training well worth it.
Q: What's one thing you've learned from your coworkers that you're grateful for?
A: "We are not saving lives. It's just accounting." While that might sound negative, the thing I get out of that is keeping things in perspective; it's easy to lose sight of that sometimes.
Q: What do you like to do outside of work?
A: I love anything I can do outside - I really enjoy running, biking, disc golfing and skiing. The other thing that takes up most of my time outside of work is DIY projects; taking a step back and seeing something you were able to create is really satisfying.
Q: Have you ever lived in a different city? If not, what other city would you want to live in?
A: Outside of living in Columbus for college, I have not. If I could live in a different city, I would choose somewhere out in the Rocky Mountains.
Q: What are three words your best friend or spouse would use to describe you?
A: Hard-working, goofy, creative.
Q: What is your favorite book, TV show, movie, or podcast?
A: I really enjoy the podcast Planet Money, it's got a lot of interesting perspective on the economy in an entertaining way of delivery that isn't stuffy textbook lessons.
