Serving patients is a privilege that comes with significant responsibilities.

About us

Civica Rx was created in late 2018 to secure the supply of important medicines hospitals use every day. As of Q2 2024, we have provided over 180 million units of essential medicines to hospitals, enough to help treat over 80 million patients. Recently, we announced we will manufacture and distribute affordable medications for consumers in an outpatient/retail setting, including affordable insulin. Insulin is an exciting project as we are partnering with nearly every corner of the diabetes ecosystem to bring low-cost insulin to people living with diabetes at no more than $30 a vial and no more than $55 for a pack of five pre-filled pens, regardless of insurance status. WHY CIVICA? Because patients should have the essential medicines they need when they need them. As a rapidly growing, entrepreneurial, nonprofit generic drug company our mission is to ensure quality generic medicines are accessible and affordable to everyone.

Civica Rx - "the nonprofit model for manufacturing." This piece, from The Medicine Maker magazine, shares highlights of our progress, our partners and our new sterile injectable manufacturing facility in City of Petersburg, VA. Excerpts: "All companies claim to put patients first, but how true is that really when the corporate pharma business revolves around profits? Civica Rx is approaching generic drug manufacturing using a nonprofit model – and it’s working... "Civica is supplying nearly 80 different generic medicines to member hospitals – and has provided over 185 million doses to date. It has also opened its own manufacturing facility in Petersburg, Virginia, with the capacity to produce 90 million vials and 50 million pre-filled syringes of medicines every year... "According to Civica's Jason Winfield, site director of engineering and technical services, there has been a big focus for some time on bringing production closer to home. 'A lot of pharmaceutical manufacturing takes place in India and China, but there have been widely publicized issues with sterile injectables. And although India is a great provider of APIs, they get a lot of their precursors from China. During the COVID-19 pandemic, materials stopped moving – and this hasn’t ended with COVID; there are still ongoing challenges in supply chains.'” Excerpts from equipment partners: From Matt Clifton, business development manager at groninger USA: "From the very start of Civica, the company was unique. A lot of people in the industry were watching them closely. They had smart people on the business side and significant industry leadership with a ton of manufacturing experience. However, I think there was some doubt early on about whether they could pull it off and if there would be any compromises on quality. But they’ve done it – their products are excellent and their facility is one of the best facilities I’ve visited. They use high-end solutions and they understand what they are doing. They are top tier in the industry.” From SKAN's Marc Suter: “It’s hard not to feel personally moved when you hear the story behind Civica. Somebody needs to tackle drug shortages, but it may not be profitable to do so for some companies. The result is that patients have to go without their medicines. I’m proud to be part of a project that is trying to change that. Civica isn’t just focused on generic drugs; they also have plans to make affordable insulin. I really wasn’t aware of how difficult the situation is in the US compared with Europe, where I am based. If you follow through and stand with something, you can make changes in this industry. It’s been amazing to watch what Civica has done.” Thanks to the teams at groninger & co. gmbh and SKAN for helping to bring our new manufacturing facility to life! https://lnkd.in/eCB2ebgQ

#ICYMI Exciting progress in the pharmaceutical Industry, as shared by Healthcare Packaging author Keren Sookne. At non-profit Civica Rx, innovation isn't just about cost-saving measures—it's about investing in cutting-edge technology to make healthcare affordable and available for all. Instead of opting for entry-level equipment, Civica Rx prioritized high-quality, high efficiency filling systems from the start. In just five years since their launch, Civica Rx has made significant strides. From securing contracts with established manufacturing sites to now producing their own engineering batches in their state-of-the-art injectable drug facility in Petersburg, VA, their progress is nothing short of remarkable. Healthcare packaging captures their thought process, their need for flexibility, and why they selected an isolator-integrated vial filling line and nest filling line from groninger Group and SKAN. Thank you Jason Winfield Matt Clifton and Marc Suter for sharing your insights for this story! We applaud U.S. Sen. Jacky Rosen's efforts to launch a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) inquiry into PBMs that are blocking patient access to low-cost generic medicines. PBMs that profit from higher-priced medicines have a financial disincentive to provide access to low-cost generics, such as those offered by CivicaScript. Profit should not come before patients. https://lnkd.in/ezqVfqRi

This new drug shortage report is alarming but not surprising. It shows that the average shortage is lasting three years and getting longer. It demonstrates how price is predictive of a shortage. And, it reports that new shortages in 2023 were predominantly associated with the US and EU. From US Pharmacopeia: "The insights in the USP Annual Drug Shortages Report are derived from USP’s Medicine Supply Map. It uses artificial intelligence and predictive analytics to identify, characterize, and predict risk in the complex supply chain for manufacturing drug products and their ingredients... "The report provides an in-depth analysis of the factors leading to increased shortages in 2023, particularly in generic sterile injectable medicines. With the average duration of shortages exceeding three years, it's more important than ever to equip your organization to anticipate and mitigate these risks." Key report highlights: --Economic factors: The impact of pricing and manufacturing complexities on drug shortages. --Geographic concentration: How the centralization of production can increase vulnerability. --Quality concerns: Highlighting quality issues from regulatory inspections and recalls that can indicate drug shortage risks. Civica Rx is becoming a part of the solution, ensuring a reliable supply of quality medications for approximately 1,500 member hospitals across the U.S. through longer-term contracts (providing predictability for both hospitals and the manufacturer), fair and sustainable pricing, buffer inventory and a relentless focus on quality. We are also boosting U.S. based sterile injectable manufacturing capability through our new, state-of-the-art facility in City of Petersburg, VA, outside of Richmond, VA. https://lnkd.in/e5ipNB5A
