About us

Wheat Ridge embodies the deep roots of a City with a rich history, that dates back to the early 1800s, and a strong sense of community. Its central location provides shorts commutes to major interstate highways, a soon-to-open commuter rail line, the majestic Rocky Mountains, and the amenities of the large metropolitan City of Denver, Colorado. With easy access from I-70, you can be skiing, hiking or participating in a wide range of internationally-acclaimed mountain sports in less than an hour. Wheat Ridge is a home-rule City, operating under a Council-Manager form of government. In this form of government, the Council is the governing body of the City elected by the public, and the manager is hired by Council to carry out the policies it establishes. The Council consists of eight members, two from each Council District, and an at-large, elected Mayor.

The City of Wheat Ridge would like to give a big congratulations to our Parks Operations Supervisor Joe Buesser for graduating from Leadership JeffCo, a program where participants enhance leadership skills, build connections, and gain community insight.  Joe has dedicated 15 years to the City of Wheat Ridge, beginning as a seasonal parks maintenance worker in 2009 and now serving as one of the Parks Supervisors. He oversees all parks on the west side of Wheat Ridge, tackling day-to-day tasks such as assisting his crew with any issues, ensuring they have necessary supplies, repairing equipment, answering calls, and occasionally rolling up his sleeves in the field!  The city is incredibly thankful for Joe’s dedication and service to Wheat Ridge!

A proclamation for Park & Recreation Month was made at this week’s city council meeting! Parks and Recreation Director Karen O'Donnell was joined by several team members to accept the proclamation. This year’s National Recreation and Park Association Park and Recreation Month theme — “Where You Belong” — celebrates the many ways park and recreation professionals foster a sense of belonging in the community by providing welcoming and inclusive programs, essential services for all ages and abilities, and safe, accessible spaces to build meaningful connections. The City of Wheat Ridge would like to extend many thanks to the Parks & Recreation team for their commitment to providing excellent spaces and services! #parkandrecreationmonth

Join us in wishing Commander Jon Pickett a fantastic and well-deserved retirement! Commander Pickett recently retired from the Wheat Ridge Police Department (WRPD) after 33 years of dedicated service.     A Fort Collins native, Commander Pickett identified his career path early as a Police Explorer with Fort Collins Police Services. Before joining WRPD, he helped create the Wheat Ridge Police Athletic League, teaching kids martial arts in the community. After graduating from Colorado State University, he joined the Wheat Ridge Police Department in July of 1991.     Commander Pickett became a West Metro SWAT Team member and quickly climbed the ranks as a leader, Sergeant and Commander. His 27 years of service on West Metro SWAT is a department record. After working patrol, he was an assigned detective for the West Metro Drug Task Force. As a Sergeant, he led patrol shifts, the Crash and Traffic Team and Crimes against Persons Team in our Investigation Bureau. As a Commander, he led the Patrol Team and the Investigation Bureau.     Commander Picket helped establish the WRPD Cadet Program that gives local high school students a chance to learn about what it takes to be in law enforcement. He advocated for and developed the WRPD philosophy of Relationship Based Policing and led the transition to Body Worn Cameras.     In the department, he has earned two Medals of Achievement, three Medals of Commendation and the Medal of Valor. His work has impacted communities across the west metro area and has been recognized with awards from neighboring agencies, including Lakewood Police Department, Edgewater Colorado Police Department and Arvada Police Department, Colorado. He embodies the WRPD vision statement of “Exceptional People providing Exceptional Service.” Thank you, Commander Pickett, for your service to Wheat Ridge!
