The City has partnered with York Technical College to offer City Apprenticeships within the Public Works and Utilities - Water & Sewer departments. Yesterday morning (April 24), we held the Apprenticeship Signing Day at York Tech, where we celebrated 8 CDL apprentices in Water & Sewer and Public Works; Tristan Ballard, Lucas Fields, Anthony Jackson, Caleb Johnson, Dougie Maxwell, Samuel Roach, Chuck Simmons. Dougie Maxwell had this to say about the program, "My apprenticeship experience so far has been a life-changing event. It has given me room for growth and meeting many different people. I have learned a lot of new things that have helped me along the way. The apprenticeship will help me succeed in the future with my goals in the City of Rock Hill.” ABOUT THE PROGRAM: In partnership with York Tech, apprentices obtain their Commercial Driver's License as part of working in the Public Works department or on the Water Distribution & Collections team in Utilities. All City Apprenticeships include increased compensation once additional licensure has been obtained. Since 2022, we have had 10 apprentices complete the program and 4 still in progress. On February 29, Governor McMaster signed a bill designating the first Monday in March as "Water Professionals Day". A couple of our water professionals went to the State House for the bill signing. This Monday, March 4, the entire State of South Carolina will observe "Water Professionals Day" for the first time. Drinking water, wastewater and stormwater professionals will be honored for the incredible part they play in serving the residents and communities across our state. The City of Rock Hill is thankful for our amazing team members and the impact they have on our community!
