Citymeals ensures homebound elderly New Yorkers will never go a day without nourishing meals and vital companionship.
About us
Citymeals on Wheels provides a continuous lifeline of nourishing meals and vital companionship to New York City’s homebound elderly. Each year, Citymeals prepares and delivers over 2 million weekend, holiday and emergency meals for nearly 22,000 of our vulnerable older neighbors. We have delivered over 70 million meals since our founding in 1981. Citymeals has set an ambitious goal to end elder hunger in New York City by 2040. 100% of all public donations will be used entirely for the preparation and delivery of meals, thanks to the generosity of our Board of Directors, the City of New York, sponsors and other designated gifts.

Friend and colleague Jeremy L. Kaplan, of Citymeals on Wheels’ partner Encore Community Services, states clearly the need for increased funding for services for older adults in New York City. I applaud his op-ed and support efforts for the city to increase this funding.
Yesterday, the New York City Council Committee on Aging, chaired by Councilmember Crystal Hudson, held a hearing on the City’s “Community Care Plan,” an initiative that aims to help older New Yorkers age in place and avoid institutional care. The initiative is brilliant, innovative, and has high potential for impact; but it is severely underfunded. As a follow up to the hearing, I published an OpEd in AMNY. There is a clear call to action for New York City to both increase funding for nonprofit employee wages and funding for services that help older New Yorkers age and thrive at home for as long as possible. What I would add to the piece I wrote is the critical role of philanthropy: There is also a call to action for private individuals to contribute and help older New Yorkers age in place and thrive. Nonprofits don’t and can’t only rely on the government to fund these critical services. We also need private individuals and philanthropic institutions to help fill the gaps where government funding falls short, rather than adding more unfunded mandates. Local government can, together with private individuals and philanthropy, make New York City a better place to age and thrive. https://lnkd.in/ecnnNiEj #AgeInPlace #AgeInclusiveCity #OlderAdultsBuiltThisCity Encore Community Services amNY Newspaper NYC Department for the Aging NYC Office of the Mayor New York City Council Crystal Hudson LiveOn NY Human Services Council of New York Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York Anat Gerstein

“One meal, five days a week is not enough.” Thank you to Jeremy Kaplan who leads our partner organization Encore Community Services for illuminating how much more the city and our network (with the support we need) could be doing to help older New Yorkers age with dignity in their own homes.
