Cleaner air, reduced stormwater run-off, safer roads, and cooler environments are just some of the benefits of planting trees. Toledo faces a citywide challenge of low tree canopy, with an average of only 17% coverage, far below the recommended target of 35-40% for maximum benefits in our climate. Urban tree canopy contributes to all of those things AND plays a crucial role in mitigating urban heat islands, which are associated with negative health and environmental effects. Simple benefits can be the most effective for our environment, and for our wallets! Check out the recent interview with Joe Fausnaugh as he explains the benefits of trees. 👇 https://ow.ly/J9tb50SyfmC

Which do you dislike more: the heat or the humidity? Did you know urban areas can become "heat islands"? Buildings and roads absorb and re-emit more heat than natural landscapes, causing higher temperatures. Heat island impacts include: ⚡ Increased energy consumption ⬆️ Elevated emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases 😷 Compromised human health and comfort Learn more about heat islands and their effects at: https://lnkd.in/dK2WESNx

Where were you during the recent extreme heat? 🔥 The map below provides a snapshot of how urban heat varies across neighborhoods. Notice how much of the city is in red, meaning the majority of our environment gets hotter due to factors like limited green space, built-up areas with unshaded parking lots, and industrial land. The results from our Urban Heat Mapping study will help bring local and equitable solutions for areas facing the greatest threats. Take a unique look at Toledo through the lens of Jarvis Moore, MLK Bridge operator! 👀 Jarvis, a 1977 Libby graduate, served in the U.S. Marine Corps and Army before joining the City of Toledo in 1995. He ensures the MLK Bridge operates smoothly for passing ships. "When a ship comes up the Maumee River, we monitor the radio. They tell us about 20 minutes till when you see the boat coming, you want to clear the bridge, make sure our traffic is stopped,” Moore said. Can you guess how long it takes for the bridge to rise and lower? Click the link to find out and read more about Jarvis' fascinating story! 👉 https://ow.ly/heUS50SuA0X

Twenty-four members from the Division of Urban Beautification – Forestry Operations were recertified through the ACRT Arborist Training, the only national line clearance certification program in the United States. The Line Clearance Arborist Certification is designed for tree workers whose person, tree, or equipment comes within the 10-foot safety zone around energized wires. Successful completion of this course satisfies OSHA’s electrical safety training requirement. Congratulations to all the recertified employees for their dedication and hard work!
