City employees Erin Simmons and Cynthia Wilkes recently volunteered at a United Way event, where they helped pack 1,000 grade-specific backpacks filled with essential supplies, including vital information about lead poisoning prevention. These backpacks will be distributed to community organizations such as Toledo Public Schools, Hope Toledo, and the Sylvania Family Center. “Lead education is for everyone,” Simmons said. “There’s no better way to inform the public than through initiatives like this. It aligns perfectly with the City of Toledo’s mission to build strong, lead-free communities. It was an honor to volunteer and represent the city.” Our City departments are fully committed to eliminating lead from our homes and ensuring the health and safety of our residents. The Department of Housing and Community Development and Public Utilities are working hand-in-hand to educate the community about the dangers of lead poisoning. We're actively replacing lead water lines and eliminating lead paint in homes to create safer living environments. Lead poisoning can have serious health effects, especially for young children. It’s crucial to stay informed and take preventive measures to protect our community. #CDBGinToledo This week, we're celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. Established in 1974, CDBG was created to provide communities with the resources they need to tackle pressing issues like the health and safety of residents, insufficient housing, blight, and disaster recovery. The program was designed to empower local governments to address their unique challenges and improve the quality of life for their residents. By providing flexible funding, CDBG enables cities like Toledo to invest in infrastructure, economic development, and social services that uplift our community. Over the next week, we’ll highlight how the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) has positively impacted our community in recent years. From enhancing public services to providing housing solutions, these funds have made a real difference in the lives of Toledo residents.
