Rogers Bridge Project is Project of the Year from the American Public Works Association The City of Duluth is thrilled to announce the remarkable achievement of the Rogers Bridge Project, which has recently been honored with the prestigious 2024 Project of the Year Award from the American Public Works Association (APWA) in the Structures category for projects valued between $5M-$25M. This accolade is just one of several awards the project has garnered since its ribbon-cutting ceremony in July 2023. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to APWA for this recognition. We would like to acknowledge our invaluable fiscal partners: Gwinnett County, Fulton County, the City of Johns Creek, Atlanta Regional Commission, Georgia DOT, and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). Additionally, we want to express our appreciation to our talented design partners, Thomas & Hutton/CHA, Edwards-Pitman, and United Consulting. Special thanks also go to our construction partners, KCI & Astra. The Rogers Bridge Project has transformed an existing out-of-service bridge into a stunning replica truss structure. Originally built in the early 1900s for horse and buggy traffic, this Pennsylvania Pin-Connected Petit Thru Truss was closed to one-lane motor vehicle traffic and removed from GDOT’s inventory in the 1970s. Recognizing the importance of restoring this vital connection, the City of Duluth collaborated with the City of Johns Creek, Fulton County, & Gwinnett County to develop and implement this project. The new pedestrian bridge reconnects our two cities and counties and links two vibrant park systems on either side. The trail leading to and from the bridge on the Duluth side offers direct access to the Western Gwinnett Pathway, which is currently under construction by Gwinnett Co. While initially intended as a restoration project, the bridge was found too structurally deficient for rehabilitation. Thanks to the collaboration of the State Historic Preservation Office, FHWA, & the Georgia DOT, the project team could move forward with a replacement rather than a restoration of this historic structure. We are grateful for the support of all our partners in bringing this project to life and creating a lasting asset for our community!
