ย  ๐ŸŒ CIRCUIT partners will be presenting groundbreaking insights at EUROENGEO 2024, taking place in Dubrovnik from October 8 to 12, 2024. ๐Ÿ“œ Our paper, titled "Characterisation of Embankment on Soft Ground in the Netherlands," has been authored by Ken Gavin (INGEO), Tom de Gast (Waterschap Hollandse Delta), Mario Bacic, Sasa Meho Kovacevic (Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Zagreb) ย  ๐Ÿ“ The case study focuses on the "Oostmolendijk" area, located between Ridderkerk and Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht, along the river Noord in Zuid-Holland. This segment of the dyke ring IJssel-monde, also known as dijkring 17, faces continuous ground settlement and road surface cracking, leading to ongoing maintenance challenges. ย  ๐Ÿ” Our paper details the comprehensive site investigation aimed at characterizing these Holocene deposits to assess the long-term performance of the embankment and explore potential stabilization methods, including soil improvement. This includes: - **Geophysical Techniques**: MASW and ERT - **Geotechnical Methods**: Additional CPTs and boreholes for soil sampling - **Focus**: Vertical and horizontal fluctuation scales of soil layers and correlation between geophysical and geotechnical measurements. ย  We are thrilled to share our findings and discuss innovative solutions for embankment stabilization. ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿšง Last week, we had the opportunity to visit a fascinating test site at Lopik, just 25 km from our Oostmolendijk pilot 3 site! Here, GEOSAFE's impressive trencher is being utilized for mixed-in-place technology, achieving soil mixing depths of 15 meters. ย  The CIRCUIT partners, the Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Zagreb and INGEO explored the potential for implementing this technology at the Oostmolendijk site, with a keen focus on sustainable soil improvement. ย  The extensive monitoring program set up at the Lopik site promises to provide us with invaluable data on this innovative approach to soil enhancement. ย  ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ”ง #SustainableEngineering #SoilImprovement #Innovation #wearecircular

The assessment of social performance differs from the assessment of economic and environmental aspects because it requires both quantitative and descriptive approaches. CIRCUIT framework covers the whole life cycle, from performance-based design, over construction, maintenance, and operation, to decommissioning and end-of-life of the transport infrastructure. ๐Ÿ—๏ธ๐Ÿ‘ทโ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ“The applicability and the capabilities of the developed holistic circularity framework will be demonstrated through the pilot projects. ๐ŸŒ Update from Slovenia! ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฎ Our circuit team just concluded a productive week in Slovenia, one of the pilot countries of our project. ๐Ÿข Zavod za gradbeniลกtvo Slovenije - Slovenian National Building and Civil Engineering Institute hosted the first two days where partners gathered to exchange progress updates and brainstorm on the next steps. ๐Ÿ”ฌ At ZAG, we also visited three of their different labs (Geology and geomechanics, Construction, and Materials, including 3D printing) learning about innovative uses of green materials like clays in construction amongst other things. ๐ŸŒŠ At day 3 we met with the ฤŒrna municipality Mayor Mrs. Romana Lesjak and visited the pilot location, a municipality heavily affected by last August's flooding. The mayor did a great job leading her community through days when they were completely cut off and later on during cleaning and ongoing reconstruction. For her efforts, she received the โ€œSlovenian of the Yearโ€ award from the leading Slovenian newspaper ๐Ÿ†https://lnkd.in/e3N7iXS3 ๐ŸŒ‰ Thanks to Circuit, the bridge pictured will be rebuilt using materials salvaged from the flood-damaged infrastructure. ๐Ÿ™ Special thanks to Zavod za gradbeniลกtvo Slovenije - Slovenian National Building and Civil Engineering Institute and ฤŒrna for their hospitality and for organising everything (even the activities to strengthen the team collaboration!)
