Here is an example illustrating the carbon history of a removal project area. Starting from the year 2000, we can observe that there has been no clearance in the 10 years preceding the project start in 2015. The Chloris Platform delivers immediate visual maps and interactive insights of any area of interest. If you want to analyze your specific project, get in touch with the team at [email protected]! What are the most accurate ways of estimating carbon stored in vegetation? In the latest study published in Nature by Sylvera, traditional carbon monitoring methodologies fall short of capturing the full "carbon picture." The study underscores the significant potential in terms of stored carbon that nature holds in the fight against climate change, if only we are able to see it. Specifically, it reveals that when measured with multi-scale LiDAR, the Miombo woodlands in Mozambique store 1.5 to 2.2 times more carbon than previously estimated using traditional methods. 🌿 Groundbreaking Research Reveals Miombo Woodlands' Hidden Potential 🌿 Nature holds immense potential in the fight against climate change, but accurately measuring its carbon storage has long been a challenge. Our groundbreaking study, published in Communications Earth & Environment, reveals that Miombo woodlands in Mozambique store 1.5 to 2.2 times more carbon than previously thought using traditional methods. This has significant implications: - Africa’s miombo woodlands could potentially store double the carbon previously estimated. - Destroying these woodlands releases far more carbon than we realized. - Investing in forest protection & restoration is even more critical. Read about the findings in Bloomberg, or deep dive into the full blog post to read more about the implications for policymakers, finance and businesses and how we combined drone and laser technology to arrive at a more accurate data set then traditional methods have been able to provide in the full blog post. #climatechange #forests #conservation #sustainability #naturebasedsolutions #sylvera

How can AI-supported monitoring technologies help bring trust to natural climate solutions? One part of the answer is: by enhancing the transparency, reliability, consistency, comparability, and scalability of the carbon estimates that underpin the development, MRV,and financing of natural climate solutions. The other part of the answer is: by building trust in the ability of such novel technologies to deliver upon those promises. 💡 Read our blog post by Chloris Head of Partnerships Florian Reber to learn more about this topic: https://lnkd.in/dE9PFuu8 What are your thoughts on this new monitoring frontier? Human degradation of tropical moist forests is greater than previously estimated. A recent study published in Nature demonstrates how the integration of recent and spatially sparse spaceborne LiDAR observations, with long-term and spatially continuous spaceborne optical dataset, provides a novel approach to assess forest degradation and recovery. Some of the authors’ main conclusions are: ◽ Tropical forest degradation from selective logging, fire and edge effects is a major driver of carbon and biodiversity loss, with annual rates comparable to those of deforestation ◽ Degraded forests have low and slow recovery rates ◽ Degraded forests with more than 50% canopy loss are significantly more vulnerable to subsequent deforestation ◽ Greater efforts are needed to prevent degradation and protect already degraded forests to meet the conservation pledges made at recent United Nations Climate Change and Biodiversity conferences Read the study here: https://lnkd.in/eHdPzxqa #degradation #deforestation #forest

🌲 We are excited to announce our partnership with Ecosia, the search engine that supports the restoration and growth of over 200 million trees around the world. With over 100,000 restoration sites in more than 35 countries, Ecosia delivers impact worldwide. With the scalability and consistency of our technology, the Ecosia team can now look beyond trees planted and reliably calculate the biomass increase achieved by their work. We are proud to support their mission. 🌏 Follow Ecosia to learn more about their work! #biomass #naturebasedsolutions #reforestation

Chief Tree Planting Officer at Ecosia

How do you even oversee the health and growth of more than 200 million trees? It’s a massive challenge and the core of my work at Ecosia, which is why I’m really excited to announce our partnerships with Chloris Geospatial and Kanop, who will both be providing Ecosia with in-depth forest modelings and insights based on satellite data of our tree-planting sites 🌳 This is the next step in our monitoring practices, giving us the oversight we need to improve our reforestation efforts. With this advanced technology, our tree team at Ecosia now has the capability to assess biomass levels in planting sites, which also provides us with a more accurate measurement of carbon sequestration over time. Of course, physical site visits and working closely with local partners will still be at the heart of monitoring Ecosia trees. This additional data point will facilitate the detection of areas potentially susceptible to deforestation or slow growth, so we can step in where needed. I’m looking forward to fully integrating this new technology into our monitoring work and sharing our findings! #reforestation #climate #treeplanting

That's a wrap on London Climate Action Week 2024! Carbon accounting for nature-based solutions (NBS) has been struggling with (perceived) integrity issues, scaling up investments and programs, and reporting impact consistently. Today, the combination of Earth Observation, cloud computing, and AI is proving to be a game-changer to bring more credibility and scalability to NBS. On Wednesday, June 26th, AXA Investment Managers, Natural Climate Solutions Alliance, and Chloris Geospatial hosted a lively roundtable discussion on the opportunities presented by these technologies and the barriers to broader adoption. A big thank you to our top-notch panel, including Antonia Gawel from Google, Evan Paul from Salesforce, Guy Turner from MSCI Carbon Markets, Helen Lin from At One Ventures, Priscille Raynaud from ERS - Ecosystem Restoration Standard, Mike Korchinsky from Wildlife Works and all who attended. Stay tuned for our session recap in the coming days! #AI #NatureTech #ForestCarbon
