At birth, DJ suffered damage to his brachial plexus nerves, leaving his left arm motionless. “His arm was like a noodle,” his mother says. “Zero control, zero movement. It was just hanging.” With little time left before surgery was no longer an option, orthopedic surgeon Dr. Erin Meisel joined with neurosurgeon Dr. Susan to try to restore function to the arm. https://bit.ly/3TMTj6i

The worlds of pediatrics and brain science collide: A fellow physician-scientist initially inspired St. Baldrick’s Scholar Jessica Tsai, MD, PhD to pursue a career in childhood cancer research. Today, Dr. Tsai blends her passions by connecting with patients to study their care experiences and improve treatments. She is a St. Baldrick’s Scholar, continuing her research at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles as a physician-scientist. Read more about her connection with the St. Baldrick's Foundation below. ⤵️
Jessica Tsai, MD, PhD initially planned to become a neurologist, but her passion for pediatrics grew during her clinical rotations. She was later inspired by a pediatric neuro-oncologist to pursue a career as a physician-scientist, allowing her to blend her love for pediatrics and brain science. Now, working in childhood cancer research at Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA), she enjoys connecting with patients to learn about their experiences and improve treatments. Dr. Tsai, a physician-scientist at CHLA, was a St. Baldrick’s Fellow in 2021, which helped kickstart her research on diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), a type of pediatric brain #cancer. Today, as a St. Baldrick’s Scholar, she continues her research at CHLA. In her recent research, Dr. Tsai found a gene called FOXR2 that is usually inactive but gets “switched on” in kids with DIPG. This gene can activate another group of genes that, together, trigger a process called MAPK signaling, which makes #DIPG grow quickly. Dr. Tsai's goal is to determine how these genes work together and find ways to stop the rapid growth. A portion of this research was generously supported by Griffin's Guardians, a St. Baldrick's partner. Dr. Tsai's journey illustrates how your donation can spark a ripple effect—her initial funding not only propelled our understanding of how DIPG cells grow, but also paved the way for potential future breakthroughs in DIPG treatment. Your support is crucial in advancing #research and saving children's lives.
