Our inpatient kiddos had a SWEET day yesterday at the Dairy Queen Miracle Treat Day Ice Cream Social hosted by our Recreational therapy and Child Life teams🍦💛! Thank you so much to the local Dairy Queen franchises for generously donating BLIZZARD treats ❄️ to our patients, families, and staff members. Thirty-four years ago, on July 26, 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law. The ADA is a law designed to ensure that people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. It applies to many areas of public life, including workplaces, schools, transportation, and community spaces. The aim is to ensure that individuals with disabilities can participate fully in society and have the same opportunities as everyone else. Amanda Chirelli was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy when she was a baby and started outpatient occupational, physical, and speech therapy at Children's Specialized Hospital when she was 14 years old. Now 39 years old, Amanda serves as an advocate for individuals with disabilities and works as the Outreach Coordinator for Moceans Center for Independent Living. Swimming is a great activity to cool down during hot summer temperatures. However, it's essential to practice water safety to ensure your kids can enjoy the summer safely. Water Safety Tips 🤽 ▪️ Always make sure your child is supervised near any body of water. ▪️ Teach your child to ask an adult for permission before going in or entering the water. ▪️ Make sure a locked fence protects your swimming pool. ▪️ Teach your child to walk carefully around the pool area, as running can be dangerous. ▪️ Tell your child to always swim with a friend. ▪️ Always use a certified life vest when in water vehicles. If your child does not know how to swim, use the life vest in and around any body of water. Special water safety and swimming lessons are available for children with special health care needs. Activity Connection's Friday Night Fever members had a great time at Warinanco Park Lake for a Pedal Boat event! Everyone had a chance to go out on the water, where they relaxed, pedaled, and even raced against each other in the boats! With the help of our amazing staff and volunteers, it was a wonderful day. Our Friday Night Fever program encourages teens to socialize, explore different opportunities & activities, and even try something new! We are continuing to celebrate Disability Pride this month and every month! Carly Decker came to CSH after suffering from a severe B12 deficiency and nitric oxide exposure, which left her unable to feel below the waist – possibly forever. After almost two months of intense rehabilitation, Carly walked out of CSH with the aid of a brace on her right leg. Today, Carly is pursuing her goal of becoming a Physician Assistant and is mentoring other kids who have had similar experiences. One of Carly’s proudest recent accomplishments is starting therapeutic horseback riding. Riding allows her to strengthen the muscles needed for walking while enjoying an activity she loves. Riding has also helped to increase her confidence by allowing her to feel independence and a sense of control.
