"We wanted a more comprehensive, big-picture look at the patient’s clinical status,” said Erin Pitchure, BSN, RN, quality initiative specialist at Akron Children's Hospital. That quest led the hospital to launch a pilot program in 2019 based on the Rothman Index, a predictive analytics program that helps clinicians assess a patient’s condition and predict the possibility of deterioration over time. During the pilot stage, the tool reduced Medical Response Team (MRT) calls by nearly 40%. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eyVKqz6s

The solution for a staffing shortage at Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) materialized as a simple question from a mailroom clerk. “How can I become a patient care partner?” The bold question from the amiable clerk led supervisors on 5 East down a path to reskill nonclinical CHLA employees into clinical roles. Six months after the initiative began, five employees are working on the floor as patient care partners. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/d37xDzEC

“If you ask every single child what they are most afraid of at the doctor, it’s the needle pain. It’s the number one problem of patients, yet most children’s hospitals only offer relief for some children, some of the time,” said Dr. Stefan Friedrichsdorf, the medical director of the Stad Center for Pediatric Pain, Palliative, and Integrative Medicine at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals. “It is everyone’s problem — but nobody’s responsibility. It is high time for hospitals to allocate resources the address the number one concern of children.” The “Comfort Promise” treatment bundle has long been promoted by researchers, clinicians, and child life specialists and provides the modalities to every child — every time. Now the standard of care at Benioff Children’s Hospitals, Children's Minnesota, and dozens of children’s hospitals around the world, the Comfort Promise helps make injections and blood draws easier for patients of all ages. Earlier this year, Elmo went viral after he asked how everyone was doing. The responses surprised him. Sesame Workshop announced this week that it is developing a digital course for providers and for talking with children about parental substance abuse with Foundation for Opioid Response Efforts. Jeanette Betancourt, Sesame Workshop's senior vice president for U.S. social impact, said, "Elmo — and other Muppets, such as Cookie Monster and even Oscar the Grouch — have long been asking their young audiences about feelings, and sharing their own. It’s part of a yearslong effort by Sesame Street to foster conversations about mental well-being, and makes Sesame a logical partner for others with similar aims."
