I’m a little late, but I’d like to share that for the last few weeks before school started, I was able to participate in the Child Family Health International Program in Puerto Escondido Oaxaca, Mexico!🇲🇽 Fun fact: my parents were born & raised in Oaxaca and I’ve only visited once back in 2019. But to be here as a pre-medical student has been pretty much the highlight of my pre-med journey so far. I spent this time learning about global health disparities and how it’s evolved over time in Mexico. Additionally, I was able to shadow physicians in two different clinics where I got to learn about different diseases and treatments such as Dengue which is a common tropical disease in Puerto. We were also able to visit a Partera (midwife) who taught us about the traditional way women give birth in Oaxaca & how important herbal medicine play a role in their work. This experience was so special to me and I’m grateful for having this chance to gain insight on global health. I want to give a special shout out to the directors & our house mom for being so amazing and showing me that there’s still so much more to learn about the world. And a huge thank you to Child Family Health International for providing this amazing opportunity.

With summer officially coming to an end, I thought I'd share what I've been up to for the past few months! The highlight of my summer was spending a month traveling around northern India with Child Family Health International. Not only was India one of the most breathtaking places I have ever been to, but I learned so much from amazing healthcare practitioners and public health officials. From everything to the basics of the Indian healthcare system to how cultural beliefs and practices influence how people seek out and receive healthcare, I am so fortunate to have had this opportunity! I am sure that the things I saw and the lessons I learned will stick with me through my future career in global health and into the rest of my life. I spent the rest of the summer preparing for another year of classes. Even though all of my coursework is online, I am excited to further my knowledge of global and public health!

  • Thank you Yman for sharing your experience! We are so happy to hear you enjoyed your CFHI program.

For the past two months, I have had the pleasure of embarking on UCLA's Global Health Internship with Child Family Health International (CFHI) in La Paz, Bolivia. Through this program, I shadowed and volunteered in hospitals and clinics across the city, engaging in lab work and assisting in patient care. I worked alongside doctors, nurses, and residents, to whom I could ask questions and learn from. I attended medical seminars, where I got to learn about the Bolivian health care system while also discussing global health disparities and accessibility, as well as presenting case studies, where I got to explore and propose solutions to diseases impacting our patients. Additionally, this served as a culturally immersive experience. I attended bi-weekly Spanish classes where I got to practice Spanish through a medical lens, and would participate in cultural activities to learn about Bolivian history, arts, and society. This internship provided me with hands-on exposure to global health, and strengthened my understanding of the medical field. I would like to thank CFHI and UCLA's International Education Office for this experience, as well as all of the health-care professionals who guided me throughout this journey.
