Recently, many of our team members attended the Bethel SuperHero Sepsis 5K/Walk in Hixson and educated participants on sepsis. Sepsis is the body's extreme response to infection and is life-threatening. "We heard a lot of stories from the community about someone they knew, or family members, that had sepsis," said Sherry Baierl, quality sepsis patient safety program manager. "A lot of the participants did not know what sepsis was. Because of that, it was great to bring sepsis awareness to the community" According to the CDC, at least 1.7 million adults in America develop sepsis each year. Sepsis awareness is critical, as sepsis is often avoidable and treatable if detected early. Implementing preventive measures against infections within heath care settings and the community can also reduce the occurrence of sepsis.
