High Purity Ore From The Chesapeake Bay Region

About us

Chesapeake Minerals is a division of Stewart Companies, a mid-Atlantic-based group of diversified businesses that employs over 1600 people across multiple markets. The Stewart Companies have active mining operations in Maryland, Pennsylvania and Colorado, where sand, gravel and stone production exceeds 3.2M tons annually. Chesapeake Minerals uses select grades of quartz gravel supplied by York Building Products Co., Inc.’s adjacent Belvedere plant where more than 10,000 tons of alluvial sand and gravel are processed daily. Select quartz gravel is crushed, washed and classified into multiple low-iron quartz commodities. Glass sand (40 x 140 US Mesh) is then dried and separated from remaining iron-bearing magnetic minerals to make an ultra-low iron glass sand (Principio White). Following magnetic separation, our glass sand is 99.998% SiO2. A grinding mill will be added to the circuit and commissioned in second quarter of 2022 to produce high purity silica powders to customer specification.

Progress continues at a rapid pace on Chesapeake Minerals' latest ceramic-lined grinding mill, which incorporates two levels of dynamic air classification. This represents a significant accomplishment following the successful commissioning of our 80-ton per hour quartz grinding mill, equipped with two stages of hydraulic classification. With these advancements in milling capabilities, paired with our unique gravel deposits, we now have the capacity to produce multiple grades of the ultra-low iron quartz sands.

On October 26, the first of two ball mills was successfully installed, marking a significant milestone in the optimization of sizing for 40 x 140 ultra-low iron glass sand. The completion of the structure was accompanied by the installation of essential components such as tanks, pumps, classifiers, and piping. Subsequently, on December 7, the second mill was installed, dedicated to further size reduction. Plans for early 2024 include the installation of the building structure and equipment, featuring two high efficiency air classifiers. Initially, the low iron and ultra-low iron quartz extracted will cater to the chemical and specialty glass industries. Concurrently, ongoing Research & Development initiatives at Chesapeake Minerals and York Building Products are committed to identifying the highest and best use of our mined materials. Kudos to our construction and engineering teams for a seamless and well-executed installation!
