About us
The goal of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is to make Charlotte one of the safest large cities in America. To do that, we continually advance strategies that prevent crime. We find ways to engage the community in taking steps that help minimize opportunities for victimization. We explore appropriate policy direction with the Mayor and City Council. We seek solutions to the complex community problems that contribute to crime and disorder. And we enforce the laws and arrest the people who break them. The officers, staff and volunteers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department take very seriously their duty to provide citizens with professional, innovative and effective service. Community safety is a shared responsibility and we are committed to working in partnership with neighborhood residents and business owners as well as other local, state and federal agencies to reduce crime and increase safety.

In 2023, CMPD launched the Fifth Element Youth Outreach Pilot Program for youth ages 13-17 years old. This program was developed to meet youth where they are and provide a support system to become self-sufficient and productive members of society. The program is for youth who have a history of making poor choices or have a prior arrest yet have great potential and want to make the right choices. Through several community partnerships, each participant has access to a network of resources, including mentors, life and occupational training, career coaching and cultural enrichment activities. Participants are automatically enrolled the following year until they age out of the program. Building on the success of the pilot phase of the program from 2023, CMPD is excited to announce that we have continued to fully launch the Fifth Element Youth Outreach Program in 2024. Hear from Major Tellis on more about how CMPD launched the program and the opportunities it offers to the youth of Charlotte.
