About us

The goal of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is to make Charlotte one of the safest large cities in America. To do that, we continually advance strategies that prevent crime. We find ways to engage the community in taking steps that help minimize opportunities for victimization. We explore appropriate policy direction with the Mayor and City Council. We seek solutions to the complex community problems that contribute to crime and disorder. And we enforce the laws and arrest the people who break them. The officers, staff and volunteers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department take very seriously their duty to provide citizens with professional, innovative and effective service. Community safety is a shared responsibility and we are committed to working in partnership with neighborhood residents and business owners as well as other local, state and federal agencies to reduce crime and increase safety.

  • Our hearts are heavy for our neighbors in western North Carolina who have endured such widespread damage from Hurricane Helene. In times of crisis, law enforcement's reach goes far beyond our usual boundaries. Our commitment extends to wherever our law enforcement family needs not only support but also active assistance in recovery efforts. More than a dozen members of the CMPD have deployed to western North Carolina to aid in search and rescue operations as well as food and water distribution. Our CMPD team will also be assisting with responding to calls for service in the Black Mountain, Montreat, and Swannanoa areas. As recovery efforts continue, we urge everyone to avoid traveling to the affected region unless it's to pick up loved ones. The CMPD offers our sincere condolences and support to this community, joining the brave men and women already working tirelessly to help. We stand with our western North Carolina neighbors as they heal and rebuild from this devastating event.

  • One year ago today, the Pre-Trial Integrity Act went into effect in NC, making a significant impact on our community's safety. Those arrested for the most violent offenses now face a judge instead of a magistrate and are held more accountable for their actions. This means fewer dangerous criminals on our streets, thanks to the tireless work of Chief Jennings, District Attorney Merriweather and the NC General Assembly. Although there’s more work to be done in our judicial system to hold violent criminal accountable for their actions, this is a step in the right direction to protect our officers and safeguard our community.

  • On Saturday, our Blue Hornets baseball team competed against the CFD Blaze in the second annual Celebration of Heroes softball and baseball event. Though we didn’t come out on top, we were so happy to join to support such a worthy cause. Thank you to the Salute to Heroes Charlotte Foundation for continuing to assist first responders when we need it most. We appreciate all of your support!
