  • It’s hard to compete with the energy of Captain James Hall. He was training recruit class 127 this week for hose, streams, and appliances at Charlotte Fire Training Academy. "This is prepping them for the most important job they're going to have and that's going to a fire in the city," Hall said.   • FREE FIRE ACADEMY FOR CHARLOTTE RESIDENTS! Charlotte firefighters are sounding the alarm for their annual Citizen Fire Academy. The program is designed for people who want to learn more about the daily lives of professional firefighters and heighten their awareness regarding fire and life safety.   The program participants will be immersed in a rich learning environment that gives them an in-depth view of the Charlotte Fire Department’s services and capabilities. In addition, participants will be able to perform various skills of a professional firefighter.   The academy’s goal is to teach every participant the multitude of services and capabilities of the fire department and provide them with a clear understanding of its commitment to service.   The Citizen Fire Academy is open to adults 18 years old or older and who are Charlotte residents.   Citizens are selected based on demographics and the citizen’s ability to reach other members of their community.   The instructors are committed to providing the best learning experience, from fire trucks to the emergency communications center. The nine-week academy begins Aug. 15 and meets each Thursday from 6-8 p.m.   The program graduates will receive a certificate of completion upon successfully completing the program. One of those opportunities was training on a FAA decommissioned air traffic control tower. Training on the tower varied from structural firefighting to rappelling from the top of the control tower.   • ATTENTION!  Ladder 39 went into service at 8:01 a.m.  With Ladder 39's arrival, Charlotte Fire has 17 aerial devices on duty serving the people of Charlotte.  Ladder 39 is housed at Firehouse 39, 8325 Providence Rd. in the Arboretum area.  The first crew includes, Capt. Hines, Engineer Williams, Firefighter Cato and Firefighter Severns. Their first call was medical for a cardiac arrest patient.

    Building our community and empowering our kids. Each year, Charlotte Fire provides two unique opportunities for Charlotte area kids. A four-night five-day free camp that welcomes boys and girls in grades nine though twelve. They are camps like no other. Camp Hornet’s Nest and Camp Ignite. The Charlotte Fire summer camps are free to area kids, but Camp Hornet's Nest and Camp Ignite are only able to exist through private donations. If you can, please consider a donation through the Charlotte Regional Fire Foundation.   • Camp Hornet’s Nest is in full effect. During their 4-night, 5-day stay, campers learn skills associated with search and rescue techniques, hose-line advancement, rappelling, ladders, and much more. Camp Hornet’s Nest is a free camp that welcomes boys in grades 9-12. Through this program, we provide high school boys with the opportunity to learn more about careers in firefighting. The program teaches teamwork, responsibility, and leadership. Activities in the program will demonstrate that participants must work as a team to succeed. By the end of their stay, Camp Hornet’s Nest participants gain an understanding of the Charlotte Fire’s commitment to and pride in serving the City of Charlotte.
