Chief Clinical Officer @ Centria Healthcare | I foster an environment of clinical excellence through leadership and systems development
In the world of ABA therapy we love to talk about improving quality. If we really want to do that, we can’t just throw stones. I want to be part of a community that collectively comes together, determines what good is and then be accountable to sharing baseline and progress. I’ll start. Here at Centria Autism, we’re working on improving family engagement, so we started by defining a standard (60 minutes per month) and then measuring how much time our clinicians were spending with our families per month. We found that it was, on average, 45 minutes per month, with only 24% of clients getting more than 60 minutes per month. The reality was that some families were getting a lot, and some were getting a little to none. So we rolled out an initiative to improve these numbers across the board, and pay an incentive for those that met it each month. We worked hard to move the needle. A year later, I’m proud to share our progress report: that 24% has improved to 67%. That’s not the best number you’ve ever heard, but it’s an honest snapshot of where we are, and it’s a glimpse into where we’re headed. And yes it isn’t a measure of impact or behavior change, it’s a measure of time. Yes, it’s a process metric. But when you’re making change, large scale change, you have to start somewhere, and take and reinforce incremental progress towards the terminal goal. If we can all hold each other accountable to making progress, we can all do what we like to say we do: truly improve our quality.
