Today is World Stroke Day, and Centra is dedicated to raising awareness about stroke prevention and symptoms. Centra is known for its leading advancements in stroke care, and our Caregivers are committed to providing our patients with the highest level of care. Every 40 seconds, someone in the United States has a stroke, which is why early action is essential for stroke. One way to remember and recognize signs of stroke is through the acronym BEFAST. Balance - sudden loss of balance Eyes - Loss of vision in one or both eyes Face - Face looks uneven Arm - The arm or leg is weak or hanging down Speech - Speech is slurred, trouble speaking, or seems confused Time - Call 911 immediately if any of the symptoms above are present. We are excited to share another remarkable accomplishment from Dr. Sackett and the Heart & Vascular team, where the first pulse field ablation procedure for atrial fibrillation (AFIB) was recently performed at Centra! Pulse field ablation is the newest advancement in ablation technology for AFIB patients. Previous ablation procedures have used thermal energy with either heat (radiofrequency) or cold (cryoablation), which has a risk of damaging surrounding structures such as the esophagus and the phrenic nerve. Pulse field ablation uses an electrical pulse to create ablation lesions, tailored to avoid collateral injury and only ablates the targeted heart muscle tissue. This new type of procedure is safer and faster, allowing treatment for more patients with shorter waiting periods and less risk of complications. We are excited to bring this new approach to our patients in the Lynchburg area!
