Located 4 to 6 hours away, HIV treatment and care was once inaccessible for many community members. A closer look at deaths in 2021 captured in CDC’s National Violent Death Reporting System shows that 6 in 10 deaths were suicides and 3 in 10 deaths were homicides. Firearms were used in most of these deaths. Mental health problems, intimate partner problems, interpersonal conflicts, and acute life stressors were the leading circumstances for many of these deaths.
