CFA is taking action beyond the bag to help neighbors in need in northern NJ.

About us

The Center for Food Action (CFA) provides emergency food packages and homelessness prevention assistance to local low-income individuals and families. This year CFA is introducing the "Action Beyond the Bag" campaign to highlight the multiple programs we have initiated over the years to expand our ability to help families and individuals in need. Emergency Food Program: CFA provides seven-day food packages to low-income people from eight sites in northern New Jersey. CFA makes every effort to accommodate clients with special needs. Homelessness Prevention Program: CFA prevents evictions and the disconnection of utilities by paying security deposits on behalf of the household when funding is available. CFA makes payment directly to the landlord or the utility company. Weekend Snack Pack Program: Many low-income parents rely on school meals to feed their children. Often, children go hungry on the weekends when these meals are not available. Children attending four area schools are given easy-to-prepare, single serving food items for the weekend. Thanksgiving Food Package Program: CFA distributes approximately 3,000 Thanksgiving food packages to nearly 3,000 low-income households. Community Garden Program: As part of our effort to improve the quality of food our clients have access to, CFA has launched community gardens on the premises of CFA Englewood.
Smile Pack Program: This is a new initiative with the goal of encouraging our young clients to exercise proper dental hygiene. Each Smile Pack contains a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, etc. Packs are added twice a year to our weekend snack packs. Hunger Free New Jersey: Hunger Free New Jersey, CFA’s statewide program, advocates on behalf of the poorest and most vulnerable residents of our State by educating the public and policy-makers on critical issues affecting NJ's low-income residents.

#TeamCFA attended both Table to Table Partners in Good Health Conference and Community FoodBank of New Jersey’s Feeding New Jersey Conference which brought together local experts to learn from one another in their fight against food insecurity across New Jersey. Both events were so inspiring and educational, and we are so grateful for the chance to be exchange ideas and discuss collaborations with so many people who are working hard to end hunger in our neighborhoods and to help people get to the next steps in their lives. As Mark Dinglasan, MBA Director of the New Jersey Office of the Food Security Advocate, said at the keynote speech at the Table to Table event: "Hunt for the good in every person, every day. Hunt for the good with great intention and with great purpose." We at #TeamCFA strive to follow this advice every day in our fight against food insecurity. And we were so inspired to spend time with others doing the same in their communities. Thank you again from all of us at Center for Food Action. We look forward to our continued collaboration in the days and years to come.

About last night… Center for Food Action had the distinct honor of welcoming the Chapin Singers to the Bergen Performing Arts Center. This was a full-circle moment for our beloved organization as we acknowledge 48 years of service in northern, NJ. You see, a grant from singer and activist Harry Chapin and radio host Bill Ayers was the seed money for CFA's founding. These two men initiated a grassroots movement to combat and amplify the root causes of hunger, poverty, and injustice. CFA board members Walton Clark, Lauren McGovern, Paula Gillian, and CFA staffers attended a special pre-show meet and greet Tom and Jen Chapin and band members before the show.  As concertgoers arrived, they donated bags of food.  The irony with this food donation is that many organizations host concerts and invite CFA to be the beneficiary of donated food, but usually, we don't garner any food.  But to our pleasant surprise, the Chapin Concert goers held true to the cause of combating hunger and food insecurity. When the night was over, we generated a sizable amount of food and donations using our QR code. The Chapin family musicianship was exhilarating as they told poignant stories about Harry, his family, and his dedication to activism.  For many, it was a walk down memory lane; the band played Cat's in the Cradle and Taxi. But the watershed moment for me and TeamCFA was the discovery that one of the women who worked a part-time second job at the theatre was facing eviction and was food insecure.  The donated food was there, so she shopped and could take some much-needed staple food to help fill her cabinets so her 6 and 10 children would have sufficient food for the week's balance. CFA advocates are following up with her to provide further assistance. With tears in her eyes, she thanked us and confided that her family had not recovered economically since the pandemic despite working two or more jobs to make ends meet. Our mission of preventing homelessness and hunger was being fulfilled right before our very eyes at a Harry Chapin concert. Nicole DeSane Davis (She Series) Executive Director Center for Food Action
