🌏🌇Find out how Data-Smart City Solutions, located at the Bloomberg Center for Cities, supports #mayors and project leads in developing actionable projects that aim to improve health outcomes in historically underserved neighborhoods through the Community Data Health Initiative:
Have you heard about our project the Community Data Health Initiative? A collaboration with the Environmental Defense Fund and the African American Mayors Association, and supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and The Kresge Foundation, the initiative assists mayors and city leaders in utilizing data to address localized environmental issues, with a key focus on improving health outcomes for communities disproportionately affected by environmental hazards like air pollution and extreme heat. Our team, including Nisha Kumar, Erica Ivins, Kate Joyce Murphy, works closely with partner municipalities like the City of Detroit, City/Parish of Baton Rouge, City of Baltimore, and the District of Columbia on pilot projects, with the goal of sharing learnings and best practices across city networks nationwide. We're pleased to spotlight IOP Director's Intern, Lindsay Bernard '26, who is currently in St. Louis, MO interning for the City of St. Louis's Mayor's Office! "This summer, I'm working on workforce development in the City of St. Louis. I focus on illuminating pathways and eliminating barriers for youth to work for the City, which involves making a database of all workforce training programs in the metro area and mapping it onto municipal job openings. Additionally, I am working on focus groups with local youth to research their attitudes about working for the government, all with the goal of building up a workforce to help alleviate the massive population loss that the City currently faces. "I'm living at Washington University, enjoying time working downtown while living in a completely different area of the City. I've enjoyed getting to know the community and history here as well as exploring different museums, parks, and restaurants. My favorite experience by far was wandering around Gateway Arch National Park and going up to the top!" ▪️ ▪️ ▪️ The Director's Internship is a signature program of the IOP. Since 1995, the IOP has partnered with high-profile organizations and elected officials around the world to provide substantive, career-oriented summer internships for undergraduate students interested in politics, government, and public service. In partnership with the IOP, the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative offers ten-week work placements for current Harvard undergraduate students to explore local government.
