Thank you, Yosr Allouche, Ph.D. and the International Institute of Refrigeration for helping to make the 16th IIR-Gustav Lorentzen Conference on Natural Refrigerants a natural success. It was our honor at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Energy Engineering to host #GL2024.

Adiós, Auf Wiedersehen, Adjö, Au Revoir, Farvel, Arrivederci and Farewell to the attendees of #GL2024, who traveled from around the globe to be part of the conversation on sustainable and efficient heating and cooling systems. It was our honor to host this important event during a time when there’s a pressing need for solutions that will mitigate the impact on the environment. During the conference, 137 papers across 9 topic areas were presented. More than 245 participants from 23 countries attended the conference. Special thanks to our plenary speakers for their informative presentations: Björn Palm, Senior Professor in Energy Technology at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, provided a European perspective on hydrocarbon heat pumps, which are rising in popularity due to a phaseout of fossil fuels that has led to growing electrification of the heating sector.   Eric M. Smith, P.E., LEED A.P., Vice President and Technical Director of The International Institute of All-Natural Refrigeration (IIAR) told us how IIAR strives for safe and sustainable use of natural refrigerants through its work in standards and guidelines development, research, regulatory outreach, and advocacy. Hannes Fugmann, Head of Vapor Compression Technology at the  Fraunhofer-Institut für Solare Energiesysteme ISE, focused on R290 heat pump developments in Europe, highlighting the latest developments on achieving water-to-water heat pump systems with less than 150g charge. Zahid Ayub, Ph.D., P.E., President and Technical Director of Isotherm, Inc., focused on ammonia systems and emphasized urgent research needs for natural refrigerants in the areas of refrigerant distribution, controls, oil-free compressors for ammonia and the development of standards for CO2 systems. Smith, P.E., LEED A.P., Vice President and Technical Director of The International Institute of All-Natural Refrigeration. Plenary speakers include Björn Palm, senior professor in energy technology at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, in Stockholm, Sweden, where he headed the Division of Applied Thermodynamics and Refrigeration for over 20 years. His research covers components and systems for heat pumps and refrigeration systems, from microstructures of boiling surfaces, to combinations of heat pumps and thermal energy storage for load shifting in the energy system. A special interest has been the application of natural refrigerants like hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide, and the use of ammonia in small systems. Dr. Palm will speak about "Hydrocarbon Heat Pumps – a European Perspective." The phaseout of fossil fuels is necessary to reach the Paris Agreement goals and to limit global warming to acceptable levels. An important consequence is the electrification of the heating sector, which will force a rapid increase in the use of heat pumps. This presentation will discuss the background and the development of the heat pump market from a European perspective. New restrictions on F-gasses, possible bans of all PFAS-substances and the response from the heat pump market in Europe will also be covered.
