🌍🚀 Recap from #URBIS24: Showcasing a Digital Twin for Urban Heat Mortality Risk Assessment We are pleased to share that CARMINE’s partner, the National Observatory of Athens, had the honor of presenting at the #URBIS24 Workshop, hosted by ESA/ESRIN in Frascati, Italy, on September 17th. The presentation, "From Space to Lives Saved: A Digital Twin for Heat-Related Mortality Risk Assessment in Urban Areas," delivered by Iphigenia Keramitsoglou, sparked insightful discussions on innovative solutions for building urban resilience. 🏙️ As part of the CARMINE Project, the National Observatory of Athens showcased how their Digital Twin (DT) leverages cutting-edge Machine Learning techniques 🤖 and diverse urban data sources to estimate heat-related mortality. This powerful tool integrates real-time data streams, urban indicators, and socio-economic variables, offering both long-term projections and real-time insights to manage heatwaves more effectively. 🌡️ This Digital Twin represents a significant step forward, empowering policymakers and public health authorities to implement targeted Nature-based Solutions (NbS) and allocate resources strategically, while reinforcing urban resilience to extreme heat. A big thank you to the European Space Agency - ESA (ESA) and the #URBIS24 community for the opportunity to share CARMINE’s insights and for an inspiring exchange of ideas! 🙌 #EarthObservation #UrbanHeat #UrbanResilience #DigitalTwin #MachineLearning #CARMINEProject #ClimateAction #NbS #DestinE #ESA #EOForCities 🌍🚀

Climate Resilient Development Pathways in Metropolitan Regions of Europe
About us
The CARMINE project is at the forefront of addressing the escalating challenges posed by climate change, particularly in European metropolitan regions. Our mission is clear: to foster climate resilience through a multi-level approach that merges impact-based decision support services with innovative climate governance strategies. At the heart of CARMINE is a commitment to co-create and co-develop actionable tools, strategies, and plans that empower local communities to adapt and mitigate the effects of climate and weather extremes. By collaborating closely with stakeholders, decision-makers, and policymakers, we are forging cross-sectoral frameworks that prioritize resilience and adaptive capacity. The project is funded by the European Union as part of the Horizon Europe research and innovation funding programme.

Last week, together with Maarten Van Acker, I had a pleasant conversation with Tom Ysebaert, journalist from the Belgian newspaper De Standaard. The result is the article below about #heat in the #city and possible solutions. Article => https://lnkd.in/ed2NzP4t Cities are warmer than their surrounding countryside, a phenomenon first observed in the early 19th century by Luke Howard, the pioneer of #UrbanClimate. In a warming climate, this problem is becoming increasingly severe; fortunately, there are solutions to reduce heat and make life more pleasant for residents. Elements such as #greenery, #water, #wind, resilient #infrastructure, and #data play a crucial role in the toolkit for urban cooling, with a primary focus on neighborhoods most affected by heat. This begins with accurate measurements to determine where the greatest need lies. At the same time, it is essential to develop a long-term strategy for #urbanpolicy. The examples of forward-thinking cities in the article show that change is possible. B-Kode is currently focusing on the above themes, among others, within the framework of the CARMINE Project (Climate Resilient Development Pathways in Metropolitan Regions of Europe) and Minority Report (Mitigating environmental disruptive events using people-centric predictive digital technologies). 📺 😬 On Greek TV!
