Carmel Partners honors Juneteenth, a pivotal moment in our shared American history. The Juneteenth Story On June 19, 1865, soldiers from the Union Army rode into Galveston, Texas to deliver the news to the last of the enslaved Black Americans that they were now free. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was made effective in 1863, and many enslaved people already knew of President Lincoln’s executive order, it could not be enforced in places still under Confederate control until two years later. The day came to be known as Juneteenth by the newly freed people. Today is a time to reflect on the past, educate for the future, and celebrate the progress made while acknowledging the work that remains. Ballard incorporated as a city in 1890, and its citizens voted to annex to Seattle in 1906. Today sightseers visit the Hiram Chittenden Locks on the Ship Canal to watch salmon begin their spawning journey or tour historic Ballard Avenue. Ballard continues to be the center of a unique combination of manufacturing and commercial fishing, and recreational boating. Whether waiting while the bridge opens for a ships passage, watching a sailboat race off Shilshole, or enjoying a delicious salmon dinner, water is always a part of life in Ballard.
