🚨 Important Research Alert! 🚨 Did you know that there are differences by race and sex in bystander CPR for an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest? 🤔 In a newly published large observational cohort study of nontraumatic out of hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) during 2013-2022 (n=623,345), Chan, et al., analyzed bystander CPR rates across racial, ethnic and gender groups (Chan, et al., Circulation 2024 Aug 27;150(9):677-686). While they confirmed that bystander CPR increases survival rates in out of hospital cardiac arrests across all racial, ethnic and gender groups, they observed that the survival benefit is weaker in Black individuals and women compared to White individuals and men. These disparities remain consistent across different neighborhood characteristics as well. Understanding and addressing these differences is critical to ensure equitable health outcomes for all. And just to say... have you updated your CPR skills lately? You can find this full study, and other important research at the intersection of EMS and racial equity on the CARESTAR Research Library!
