New guidelines from Mainstay for #AI use in/by/for #HigherEducation. TL;DR version-- 1️⃣ Humans in the loop: Human oversight is crucial for #AIinEducation. California State Polytechnic University-Pomona's AI coach succeeds through a collaborative approach between AI and human staff, fostering student engagement and support while continuously refining the AI's messaging based on student needs. 2️⃣ Don't set it and forget it: AI requires ongoing strategic guidance and institutional commitment to maximize its impact on student success, not just initial deployment. 3️⃣ Be proactive: AI can be used proactively to improve student success by providing personalized support and guidance before students even realize they need help. Hillsborough Community College developed AI to reach out to 'near-grads', or students who'd almost finished their degree but hadn't taken a course in a year. The result: more than 200 near-grads re-enrolled after one semester of using the AI. 4️⃣ Balance structure and substance: AI can help students in two ways: by providing timely information (structure) and by teaching new content (substance). Georgia State University built AI that delivered the help students needed, in the format they were most likely to engage with it. 5️⃣ Embrace the journey: By breaking down complex tasks into smaller steps (that is, journey mapping), AI can provide tailored support, leading to better outcomes. West Texas A&M University did this while building AI to help more students complete the FAFSA. We ❤️these examples. CareerVillage and Coach feature in this thoughtful article by Sara Herschander in The Chronicle of Philanthropy on the use of AI in the nonprofit sector: "Yet for A.I. advocates like Jared Chung, the investments and care required to constantly debug and monitor for biases of A.I. systems are worth the possibilities they present. He argues that while it’s important to be thoughtful and cautious about the use of A.I., ultimately the decision should be driven by the needs and preferences of the people nonprofits serve. In CareerVillage’s case, the positive feedback from students and the impact that Coach is having on their career prospects makes the investment in A.I. worthwhile, he says." Awesome nonprofits also mentioned: Fast Forward, Koko, Playlab AI ❤️
