Helene caused unprecedented, widespread devastation, and many communities along the storm's path are in need of help. ⁠ ⁠ From SWFL, to the Tampa area, to the Big Bend region, the damage to Florida's gulf coast was unfathomable—but the storm's impact extended well beyond Florida, creating catastrophic conditions in Georgia, Western North Carolina, and beyond. ⁠ ⁠ Now, many communities are in need of support in one form or another.⁠ ⁠ Here's a list of resources for anyone looking to get involved, whether you'd like to volunteer your time, donate to a relief effort, or you personally need assistance of some kind: https://lnkd.in/epCVYG3V Additionally, Captains Collective is working on a guide-specific relief effort for fishing guides who have been significantly affected by the storm. What an amazing day 3!

Yesterday, we held our second Preserving Paradise Program session, where we discussed the environmental and economic impacts of past water quality crises, like the ones we saw in 2016 and 2018.⁠ ⁠ Participants were able to gain insight from a wide range of business owners and economists who have been significantly impacted by poor water quality and harmful algal blooms.⁠ ⁠ Big thanks to our panel for sharing your experiences, and to our participants for leading the discussion. BIG NEWS for Everglades restoration! ⁠ The new Lake Okeechobee System Operating Manual (LOSOM), which has been 5 years in the making, is FINALLY official and in effect over Lake Okeechobee operations for the next 5-7 years.⁠ ⁠ This is a HUGE step in the fight for clean water because this new plan is expected to reduce high-volume coastal discharges and send more beneficial water south.⁠ ⁠ But this isn’t the final finish line in the fight—improved lake operations can provide major relief, but ultimately, additional infrastructure is required to provide full-scale relief across the system. ⁠ ⁠ That's why it's critical we keep prioritizing major projects, like the EAA Reservoir, that are designed to increase the capacity to store, clean and send beneficial flows south through the Everglades.⁠ ⁠ Thanks for your help in making this moment happen, now let’s keep the momentum going strong ⁠ Swipe through to see what this means for the future of Florida's waterways, and check out our new blog: https://lnkd.in/dzdYmiYJ

Welcome to our first-ever Preserving Paradise cohort!⁠ ⁠ Over the next two months, these 23 business leaders will delve headfirst into south Florida’s water quality issues through field excursions and classroom sessions that empower them to become environmental stewards.⁠ ⁠ They’ll experience Everglades restoration up close and personal, tour the Caloosahatchee Estuary, forge powerful connections with like-minded executives, and learn how to be a positive driving force for Florida’s clean water-driven economy.⁠ ⁠ This immersive program is a collaboration between Captains For Clean Water the The Everglades Foundation, the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) and the Sanibel Captiva Chamber of Commerce.⁠ ⁠ By more deeply engaging the business community in water-quality advocacy, we can better protect our ecosystems, our communities, and our economies.
