    2x founder | Helping startups hire uniquely entrepreneurial talent

    How do I hire someone who's seen scale, yet is still scrappy? Aptible posed this question to us and we went to work: It quickly became clear that some of the most talented candidates weren't just working at high growth startups, but within larger companies known for aggressive scale and engineering excellence. But founders are often hesitant to hire someone with lots of big company background. They're fearful there's going to be a DNA or velocity mismatch. That's where it's important to dive deep and peel back the layers of the onioin. Our conversations with Nhien Tran pretty quickly revealed some extremely promising stories. As a critical PM owning the browser side of Datadog's Realtime User Monitoring product, she had learned to work within a smaller team that needed to prove it could punch above its weight to justify more resources. When the need for a React SDK emerged, Nhien led her engineering team to create one quickly, marshaling engineers that had never built one before to treat it like an internal startup. And most critically, she had seen a rapid scaling in her product areas, seeing customers provide real time feedback and enthusiasm about the value that she was delivering. And when you enter a smaller company -- that's often the biggest question founders worry about with a PM. Are they going to build the right things quickly, or are they going to spend lots of time building smart but unneeded things? Nhien answered that question head on at every step of the interview process. Hats off to an incredible partnership with the team at Aptible, including Caroline Lau and Frank Macreery for being great collaborators during this process.     When Cleanlab came to us to hire a Head of Product, we knew the situation well. It’s common for early founding teams to spend months interviewing product managers and leaders, wondering where they can find the right mix of high horsepower, EQ, and strategic tactical ability in one. In Cleanlab’s case, they wanted something more: they also needed this person to be on the bleeding edge of AI and have commercial chops to interact with customers and think through GTM strategy in a highly dynamic space. Over the course of 7 weeks, we spoke with the who’s who of up-and-coming AI product leadership, and one candidate stood out in particular. Derek Salama was one of the earliest products at Tecton, joining when they had just begun to bring on customers and seeing their platform grow through to the Series C. He owned a substantial product portfolio in his there, and had also spent numerous hours in the trenches with customers. After near 4 years, he was ready for his next challenge. We’re excited to see Derek make a splash at Cleanlab as he steps up into product leadership, and we’re thankful to have partnered with Curtis Northcutt and the team at Bain Capital Ventures and Menlo Ventures on this search! #startuphiring #producthiring #startups

He believed they had the right foundation to bring on the first sales hire, but he needed someone exceptionally entrepreneurial who could pair well with his founder mode. We spoke to dozens of candidates interested in a founding AE role, but in the end Nic’s background as high performer with strong track record of selling to technical buyers stood out. Most importantly, Nic pointed to past examples where he had helped write the sales playbook, and he was excited to do it again. We’re excited to see Nic quickly ramp up in his new home and partner with Advait as they continue to grow SuperTokens!     Anyone who’s ever recruited for a first marketing leader understands it’s a nuanced role to recruit for – especially as founders increasingly prefer marketers that can bring a power generalist skillset during the 0-1 phase.     When Bluebirds came to us looking to make a Senior Founding BDR hire, they let us know their slam dunk would be someone with an ownership mindset who could ramp quickly in an outbound-heavy role to start taking over technical discovery calls within a few months.  We’ve seen this archetype emerge recently with early-stage founders. It's what we call the BDR role – low ego, high-aptitude BDR candidates who have a demonstrated track record of entrepreneurial DNA, grit, and the ability to scale quickly by growing into a more senior role. Funny enough, Zaid was our first candidate introduction to Bluebirds. What stood out was his background as a top performer on competitive teams and his own entrepreneurial success in launching a successful business helping Amazon sellers better operationalize their own online business.
