I really like this experiment. Everyone can relate to it easily. And, it is not about showing a 'hallucinating' answer after posing a trick(y) question. It is about normal, day-to-day human interaction. Showing the state of affairs in GenAI (?) When you view it, do not focus 'how fast can the model win the game?' This made me think about the (young) age at which human beings would be able to interact differently (already). With more comprehension about what is going on. Also, with more empathy for the other (human) player and - spoiler alert - without bragging about their own (superior) intelligence. Here is the setting: You are asked to play a game with a friend. He knows the rules, and in his experience, everyone will get it after they have done it once. Wouldn't you start by disclosing that you have never played it before and do not know the rules? And, after the first (brief) explanation and your first answer, it is obvious you did not get it at all. What would you do next? See how the interaction evolves with this 'chat bot'... Let's turn to business. I am curious to see how companies will deal with this. For example, it is obvious that adding 'intelligence' (or rather 'comprehension') to chat bots is needed and possible (soon). But no doubt, everyone will be terrified when discovering that one of your customers experienced such an interaction (and posted it on linkedin)...

A GPT-4o voice killer? 🙄 If you've only read some of the hyped posts about Moshi, the new voice chat from https://kyutai.org/, you might have though that OpenAI's GPT-4o has been unseated before it even came out. My experience of actually trying it is so mind-numbing that I cannot believe that anyone taking this seriously. No hate to the team, I think it is cool that companies are experimenting and releasing the products, my problem is with those who are hyping it up for now reason. I tried to play '20 questions' with Moshi and the only question it thought to come up with was "What is the word?", which it asked me about 20 times. It then claimed to be smarter than me "because it new the name of a verb" 😶 Speaking to Moshi is like speaking to a stoned toddler. In summary: - The model is unbelievably dumb - Voice interaction is kind of getting there - Since it is a 7b model, not sure the latency is particularly a big achievement - Props to the team at Kyutai for trying stuff - But ignore the hype, this isn't it

🏆 𝐖𝐞𝐥𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐝 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞-𝐨𝐟𝐟!   At the press conference, boxer Azure directs his attention directly to the journalists: “You use Microsoft components, so I am able to offer more competitive pricing!” The reporters are captivated by Azure’s compelling message, assuming that opting for the Microsoft stack makes Azure the natural choice.   But here comes Amazon Web Services (AWS). He grabs the microphone from Azure’s hand. “I heard that bold claim too many times,” he says, with the calmness you expect from a champion. “You cannot accurately compare costs without taking Microsoft’s licensing into account and optimize around it.”  “But my promoter offers Azure Hybrid Benefit combined with Software Assurance!” Azure spits out and thrusts his finger in AWS’s face.  “Speaking of the sad demise of Software Assurance…”, the multi-time champion begins his sentence. But before the situation explodes, the PR people end the press conference. The reporters are left in suspense. Who will win the battle? We experience that some organizations continue to translate their legitimate resilience requirements into 'the required distance between DCs must be at least [so many] miles' when moving to the cloud. This does not make sense. Moreover, some have copied their existing on-prem number as the required minimal distance between 'Zones' or 'Regions', when they compare cloud service provider (CSP) options. There are real engineering differences that exist between CSPs and their services. These differences exist and they impact resiliency - as the reposted item explains. Simply copying previously useful distances may lead to unnecessarily expensive cloud architectures, or overly optimistic ones. CSPs use identical words, but these do not imply identical architectures or resiliency. As a result, it may be hard to fathom that 'not all Regions are created equal'. Also analysts may be a bit too subtle about this topic. For example, in Gartner's Magic Quadrant (MQ) descriptions you would have to be able to read between the lines (or pay for the analyst): "[CSP X] has the lowest ratio of availability zones to regions of any vendor in this MQ, and a limited set of services support the availability zone model. As a result, Gartner continues to have concerns related to the overall architecture and implementation of [CSPs cloud], despite resilience-focused engineering efforts and improved metrics during the past year." >> What does this mean for my design? >> How can I compare different CSPs? What to do? Be curious & explore public sources & ask questions. 1. Statistics about resilience are available. They are also an invitation to dive deeper; to engage with the CSPs and understand their architectures - and the ideas behind them - that lead to their performances. 2. Some CSPs have gone in depth to explain their philosophy. In particular, James Hamilton, Werner Vogels and Peter DeSantis from AWS delivered many detailed insights over the years at re:Invent. How they baked resilience into the designs of their DCs, Regions, components and cloud-services - because 'everything fails all the time'. Available on youtube. Rethink - Reset - Redirect

The definition of what "region" in the cloud is different at AWS, and at Google Cloud and Azure. Why is this important? Well, one incident in one data center took a whole GCP *region* offline! When I researched differences between cloud providers, something stood out: AWS treats their region definition much, much more strict than other cloud providers do. At AWS, a region consist of 3 or more zones (one zone can be 1 or more data centers). Zones are at least 30 miles away from each other and usually no more than 60 miles, to mitigate against local disasters like earthquakes, floods, extreme weather etc. This means that if a data center has issues, or even if a whole zone goes offline, the region continues to operate. So customers who operate in two or more zones within a region can keep operating in this region. On the other hand, Google Cloud - as well as Azure - is a lot more vague on what a region is. Sure, they both say how a region consists of multiple availability zones: but neither is clear on how "separate" a zone is. Neither guarantee geographic separation, or even building separation. Both make it clear that zones *are* independent of one another for e.g. power supply, networking etc. But no more specifics than this are given. Normally, the difference is subtle, as zones have some level of separation. Except when a local disaster strikes! Google Cloud has water intrusion in one of their data centers, impacting one zone, in eu-west-9, which is in Paris. What this would normally mean is one zone is impacted. However, in this case, the whole region - with several zones - went offline. How could this happen? Is the whole region in one building, without geographic separation and so could have "water intrusion" hit the whole building? Or was it a critical service operating in the zone impacted, took down the whole region? If so, why were zones inter-connected so tightly? We don’t have answers to either of these questions just yet. One thing is certain: "region" means something different in AWS than in other cloud providers. Incidentally, both Google Cloud and Azure claim to have more regions and zones than AWS, globally. But the comparison is not entirely apples to apples, once you realize how some cloud providers locate a region in one location (or building), while others spread them out, to allow for much more reilliency for disasters that can happen in a data center. Google will have to provide a detailed postmortem to restore trust, and explain how a problem in one data center can take a whole region down, and what improvements they will do to avoid this in the future. More details on the GCP outage: https://lnkd.in/emyBJke2 If you're a decision maker on choosing cloud providers, pay attention to the details on how they define a "region" or a "zone!" --- Follow me for interesting topics on software engineering at Big Tech and startups. Summary: Multiple Google Cloud services in the europe-west9-a zone are impacted

Description: Water intrusion in a data center in europe-west9 caused a multi-cluster failure that led to a shutdown of multiple zones. Impact is now limited to services in europe-west9-a. There is no ETA for full recovery of operations in europe-west9-a at this time. We expected to see extended outages for some services. Customers are advised to failover to other zones/regions if they are impacted.

The following services have fully recovered in europe-west9: Google Cloud Storage (GCS) Cloud Key Management Service (KMS) Cloud Identity and Access Management (IAM).

The following services have recovered in europe-west9-b and europe-west9-c, but continue to be impacted in europe-west9-a: Google Compute Engine (GCE) Cloud Run Google Cloud Load Balancer (GCLB) DataProc Cloud SQL

We will provide an update by Thursday, 2023-04-27 11:00 US/Pacific, or upon any significant development.
