Check out Caltrans District 1 - Recently completed a slope stabilization project along Route 36 in Humboldt County after rockslides from the December 2022 earthquakes. The main slide near Grizzly Creek Redwoods was active through 2023, delaying mitigation efforts. This past Spring, crews began installing a cable net drapery system to catch falling rocks and prevent them from reaching the road. The project involved removing hazardous material, hand-scaling the slope with rappelling workers, and using helicopters for drapery installation. Two elevated draperies below the main cable net will now funnel rocks and catch them before they hit the roadway. Despite the slide being relatively small, with about 10,000 cubic yards of material removed, this system aims to enhance safety for drivers along Route 36. Thanks to all involved! #Caltrans #RoadSafety #HumboldtCounty

🐶 September is National Service Dog Month! In celebration of service dogs and honor of their incredible work, Caltrans District 11 invited special guests, 2020 Sydney Paralympic Gold Medalist, Dan Guillou and his canine companion Van, to the District Office in San Diego. Through Dan’s experience as a service dog handler, we learned the important role service dogs play in the lives of people with disabilities. Service dogs provide not only unconditional love, but also comfort care, aid, support, and so much more to improve and often save people’s lives. Good boy, Van, thank you for keeping Dan safe! 🐕 #Caltrans #CaltransCulture #NationalServiceDogMonth

Caltrans District 10 (Stockton) Scientists advocate for nature and cultures. Archaeologist Sarah Luce, M.A. and biologist David Moore traveled to Tuolumne County to survey an environmentally sensitive area (ESA) along State Route 49. The two inspected trees to ensure none was marked for removal within the project area for a vegetation management program. The site is a collection area for the Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk, a place the tribe uses to harvest willow for basketry and willow mushrooms that grow on dead or live alders, oak and willow trees. It’s up to Luce and Moore to protect this and hundreds more ESAs throughout District 10 from project activity. The two often work as a pair, with Moore responsible for federally endangered or threatened animal and plant species, and Luce for areas of cultural significance to tribes and of historical importance to California.
